This fella worked for the same boss (Pita Alexander) as most of my family at some stage and I met him a few times many years ago. A very considered guy, who by the sounds of it just got a little too complacent. Such an easy thing to do.

Sad and a warning/reminder to the rest of us.

Action open anytime Mrs Finnwolf and I climb a fence, wade a river, jump a creek etc

A definite tragedy and an example of how easy things can go south for even an experienced firearms user.
A lesson to us all.

And as a safety reminder, don't just think it's climbing fences and gates that can get you in trouble. Climbing over logs in the bush or up and down slippery banks etc. All situations where you get zero warning before taking a spill.

Very sad. Can never be too careful around firearms.

Grew up in a different age. Learnt from people trained old school. Uncle religiously counted 22 bullets fired and live when using and unloading his old bsa tube mag 22 bolt.
Hand the open shotgun to someone else over the fence or place it on the ground underneath the wire.
I will say I worked out a little cheat with the A5. Flip the mag cut off and pull the bolt back to unload the chamber.
This was after they allowed more than one shot in the mag.
I was always in the belief that it would be struggle to hit yourself, far more likely to get others.
Obviously more possible than I thought.
This is still no good for the guy.

Breached basic firearm safety rules and paid the highest price for doing it. A tragedy that shouldnt have happened. Condolences to his family.

That is not so simple - giving some shoot in places where if you followed that rule you would never shoot anything
All my Hunting is so close - the animal would be spooked by the reload itself - not to mention the usual 2-5 secs you have to shoot before its gone
Maybe - you meaning - do not close the bolt from half cock ??

Sad case here and sounds like a freak accident, but still difficult to understand how a trip will put your body or part of in the vicinity of muzzle
Climbing over a fence is a complete NO NO - and was drummed into all us farm kids before anything else.

My immediate neighbor grew up with this family I imagine - maybe why he has just left for town unannounced as he usually does

Just seen recent article from the states where someone dropped a pistol on holstering at a range and it went off and killed the RO.

Indeed. This guy was generally very careful. It can become all to easy for us when we have a routine to not stop and think about our current 'state'. A bit like making a nice cuppa and thinking, did I put sugar in that already? If the routine is too automatic we can miss it without knowing we've missed it.
