In the 70’s during duck shooting season I used to leave my shotgun on top of the back of the seat in my old ute, couldn’t lock the ute but even sitting parked outside a pub the shotgun never got stolen.
The world has changed a lot since then and sadly not for the better in a lot of aspects.

For some reason I have never left a firearm in sight in a vehicle at any stage. My first vehicle was a Commer Cob (think Hillman Husky) and the back seats folded down leaving a nice cubby between the folded back and front seat to slide 2 rifles into. Otherwise they went in to the boot of later vehicles, mainly to keep them out of the direct sun.

Did however go to the pub on many occassions with mate in his series 1 with a box of geli in the back and the dets and pliers in the dash tray. Nothing was thought of it.

Seems that these wee snoops not only check parking meters, etc but have been seen to get up close to what are obviously working vehicles (dirty, dusty, muddy...your typical farm ute or your off road pride and joy). They have a face up to window close look inside to see if there is a firearm in the vehicle.
If they see a firearm, and it's obvious that the owner isn't in visual contact with the vehicle then they call the cops to come and sort it out.
Seems that a couple of guys Ashburton way have been done over already.
Could be an urban legend? Maybe...but just in case...remember to hide that firearm under a blanket or coat, etc when you park up (and keep in visual contact with the vehicle).
Anyone down Ashburton way able to comIt ment on the meter maids snooping on behalf of the Police?
It is fair and legal. If this is true the FAL holder broke the law. It is careless and stupid.

It wouldn't have to be a "meter maid/man" as anyone seeing a firearm in a vehicle could report it to the police to follow up.

If I saw it I'd probably take a picture or two to back up my story.

Question, if said firearm was in a locked case and at least part of said case was visible. Does this constitute " in sight" ?
You can't see the firearm as such. But everyone knows what's in a rifle case. I know you are required to conceal with jackets or what ever. But as I said, what if part of the case is still visible. You need a lot of stuff to cover one case let alone two. Even harder too make it looks like the stuff is covering something. A case does pretty much go from one side of a vehicle to the other. So a full load of stuff in the back seat is required in a ute that has no boot or tray cover.

We used to have rifles in the rear window when I was young? Not mention other unmentionables that would still incriminate me!

Not sure why you would give these people any reason to take away your firearms.

If it was up to the police, there would be no legal gun ownership in NZ.

Funny story; on a building site, tradie rocks up with pole sander, just so happens to fit nicely in a plastic gun case, consulting engineer spots said gun case, phone calls made to site management, all hell breaks loose, tradie gets a new a***hole reamed, said tradie opens said gun case to with the explanation along lines of never assume, Alcapone carried a violin case

I was about to ask that same question.
The firearm is not visible/concealed if it is in a case.
If the case has to be concealed, then does an empty case have to be concealed also?
I have heard of people being reprimanded for having an empty ammo box visible in their vehicle.
People need to grow some balls and stand up to bullshit intimidation such as this.

    Likewise.

Until I saw a crashed vehicle with a rifle shaped hole in the windscreen.

The car stopped rather suddenly- but the rifle didn’t, how it missed the drivers head I don’t know.
