Thread: Firearm Legislation Progress.

I have been watching for any sign of progress on the Arms Legislation but have found very little indeed. Has anybody been more successful?

Gidday there ol chap..I know jack about all this new guff ti be honest but had to renew my licence a few weeks back.
I had made up my mind not to do the online thing as I only seen it as a hassle ,,I aint no wizz on the pooter as it is.
Anyways I trudged into our local blue shop and was given a number to ring and have the papers sent as they had no such forms. I received my new licence 6 weeks to the day..the crew up North couldn't be any nicer....another 10yrs if I make it,yeah right lo.

If you're talking the review of the Register and the rewriting of the Arms Act, theres been no action as yet on either. In fairness to McKee, shes been shepherding the Three Strikes program through.

I haven't seen anything official as yet.

FSA have put in a bunch of time with the Ministry of Justice people who have taken over the legislation.
I had hoped that Act's commitment to repeal Section 6 of the legislation would happen sooner rather than later, but it sounds as if it has been rolled up into the replacement Arms Act that is being developed at the moment. Last I heard, we are expecting to see a replacement Arms Act tabled by the end of this year.

I did think it was likely that the repeal and replacement of Section 6 and the repeal and replacement of the Arms Act would be rolled together for purely practical reasons. The review of the register could slow things down even more so we will see what happens over time.

My understanding is that the advice received was that Section 6 was too "intertwined" with other sections of the Act to be repealed without a substantive review.

Given that only ~18% of LFOs have entered into the firearms register it would seem that the majority of them are waiting for an "activating" event. It'll be interesting to read the review of the registry effectiveness given relatively low usage at this time.

Everytime it appears to be discussed by the political types, it always goes back to 'military style semi-automatic weapons'
A very polarising conversation that I feel will always get in the way of meaningful changes to the register... Something FAL holders seem to care more about than those 'scary guns'

That nonsense of the MSSA seems to be something that just won't die (pardon the pun). As soon as that's consigned to history and we start talking semi auto's and detach mag semi auto's the world will be a more technically correct place (and my ocd will be happier).

Scare mongering and fear tactics works. They'll always sensationalise it to get the reaction that they want.
Every time a meaningful conversation happens with firearms legislation and the registry, some angry lib will say 'MSSA' and destroy any hope of the conversation ending well.

It gets to the point where they just stop sounding sensible though. It's kind of an 'arguing with idiots' scenario.

That's exactly what I mean.
People that don't know anything about firearms making laws about them and bringing a whole lot of stupidity to the discussions.

You should see it in the gun scaredy australia. Between the media and the antis, anytime a firearm pops up that legally beats the intent of their firearms legislation, it usually makes it to the news with much hand wringing, cries of "remember Port Arthur", and that anti kiwi twat John Howard gets rolled out saying how disappointed he is about it and how proud he was basically strongarming all the states into submission over it.
To be fair their firearms laws had more holes than a colander after being shot with 5 packets of skeet loads and massively different across states and lax as

I have it on good authority that AOs/Vettors have been told to do Security Checks on all B cat (Pistol) holders to trigger an activation event. I know it is meant to be a yearly event but that has not been happening.

It would be interesting to see how many of us on the register did not have an activating event. I'm in because my renewal came up, otherwise I would have left it to last minute.
