Hi all,
A quick question, what can an arms officer do, when inspecting firearms security after change of address.
In the past under the old rules, I have had arms officers want to see inside my safe and record details of firearms.
Curious to know, what they are legally allowed to do, and when they are making it up on the fly..

Had mine last week looked at safe opened it then closed it. Checked mounted to wall and floor checked bolts and ammo. No recording or bs just a real nice guy .
Seems pretty similar to normal proceedings then- each one has their own interpretation of the laws etc.
They should not be asking for S/Ns "for your safety" or any other reasons, we don't have a register yet. Mine wasn't interested in S/Ns but asked me how many I had IN FRONT OF MY WIFE!
My last one they recorded the number of firearms but not serial ##
For my change of address inspection, nice young guy turned up on a Sunday, I showed him my safe. He told me he didn't want to see inside it, didn't want to know how many firearms were in it, didn't want to take photo's, didn't want serial numbers. I then showed him where I stored the bolts and ammo and all was good.
My guy asked twice how many long guns I had in what calibres. I declined. Told him if he could show me I had a legal responsibility to give that info I would. He then advised it was a "service" offered to ensure people were not still holding banned weapons. I told him all my banned weapons had been already confiscated in the "buyback", which they had, and that what he was asking was seen by the shooting community as pure police over reach. He backed right off. Later I had a word with his boss who I know personally. He assured me the guy was out of line and there was no expectation or requirement for him to ask. Said he would have a word with him.
Its only a matter of time before we have to comply but I'm buggered if I will go along with their bullshit prior. In every other respect the inspector was a real nice guy and proper gentleman. Even tho his records said I still owned an SKS - which in fact Cindy paid me over $1100 to " consolidate" . He didn't pursue that for long.
I'm still waiting for my change of address inspection 13 months later....

Mine came inside a week, small firearms involved
I had an inspection of my safes when my son got his licence as he stores his firearms in these. All they wanted to see was that the safe was bolted to the wall and floor. Wasn't interested in how many guns there were just that not ammunition was stored in the safes along with the firearms and that the bolts were stored in a separate area.
I couldn't fault the guy as he was very respectful and good to talk to.
They're checking the safe. Have no firearms anywhere near it unless they are endorsed, B,C etc.
Well that is interesting too. All my bolts are stored in my rifles. Best way to lose them is to separate them. As far as I'm aware the ONLY time the law requires us to separate the bolt from the rifle is when transporting them - a recent change at that. My guy had no issue with bolts being in my rifles. Don't let cops make law on the fly.Quote:

They are allowed to ensure that you are storing your firearms without the bolts or with a cable / trigger lock in place; this is the only reason to look at your firearms.Quote:

Does ammo lock and key.. Mean you can have it in a outhouse th at is locked. But ammo isn't locked up a such in there. But the out house is locked.
That was not my understanding. Those requirement were for when transiting and leaving it in the vehicle for short periods. When at home, as long as they are secured in a safe of some sort then trigger locks are suggested but not required. Its likely that most people may not own as many trigger locks as they do firearms......Quote:

No farfing around with keys, you can have the same combination or different if you wish.
would pay to check on that...you cant use same key...for ammunition and rifles....or so I RECENTLY READ.... not that it makes a hoot of difference if baddie had the universal key at hand/aka the cordless angle grinder with cutting disc. or even a sharp file as I once found out when wifey was away with my set of keys and guns were locked in cabinet...amazing how quick a file goes through a padlock.Quote:

If someone has one of my locked containers long enough to either break or decode the combination lock or break into the container then it doesn't matter as security has been breached.
Like most security it is intended to deter the casual thief not the determined one.

Just to stir the pot, from northland firearms dept, you do not need to fit a trigger lock if travelling directly to you shooting ground, the amendments explain this although the way it is written is very confusing.

Mine was good. I actually rang them first, the guy came around to help me choose the best place to put the safe in my house and give them an idea of what i planned to do to comply.
The guy left it up to me to interpret the Act amendments but basically I now have ammo stored in lockbox in safe with different keys for both, bolts in another small safe with a few other failsafes in there as well.
When the guy came to do the full inspection he just shook the absolute shit out of the gun safe and that was essentially it.
All happened in under a fortnight
A bit late to this question, but I would ask the question of the Arms Officer where do they plan to store that information securely. It's a simple question but a big headache for any government agency, as most are now acutely aware of their obligations with regards to personal information (this would fall under personal information). IT people do not want information they do not know about on their systems, because in the event of a data breach this is the sort of stuff that gets them in trouble.Quote:

Young work mate was interviewed for his FAL today and the lady told him he can have guns in the safe with bolts in the separate locked compartment at the top that has different key but ammo has to be in another locked box totally separate to the gun safe.
Just re read the regulations and it doesn't say that so I'm thinking she got it wrong what do you all think?

24BGeneral conditions of firearms licence
(1)
Every firearms licence is subject to the conditions that the holder of a firearms licence must,—
(a)
when using a firearm, act in a way that does not pose a risk to themselves or others; and
(b)
produce any firearm that the licence holder is carrying to a member of the Police on demand; and
(c)
permit a member of the Police to inspect all firearms in the licence holder’s possession, the place or places where the firearms are or will be kept, and the place or places where the ammunition is or will be kept, and, for those purposes, to enter at all reasonable times upon the premises where that place or those places are situated; and
(d)
permit a member of the Police to inspect the security arrangements in any vehicle used by the holder to transport the licence holder’s firearms; and
(e)
inform a member of the Police if, after the issue of the licence, any of the circumstances described in section 24A(1) apply to the licence holder; and
(f)
inform a member of the Police if their health practitioner changes, and provide updated details of the name and contact details of their health practitioner.
(2)
Subsection (1)(f) does not apply to a holder of a firearms licence who is a visitor.
(3)
It is the duty of every member of the Police exercising any power conferred by subsection (1)(c) or (d)—
(a)
to give at least 7 days’ notice of the proposed inspection under subsection (1)(c) or (d); and
(b)
to identify themselves to the holder of the firearms licence; and
(c)
to tell the holder of the firearms licence that the power is being exercised under subsection (1)(c) or (d), as the case may be; and
(d)
if they are not in uniform, to produce on initial entry, and, if requested, at any subsequent time, evidence that they are a member of the Police.

The only advice I will take seriously is from COLFO or SSANZ or a lawyer who specialises in firearms law.
Even this forum, while some of us seem to have it understood pretty well, there is a lot if incorrect advice here regarding firearms law.
I renewed mine this time last year and he just wanted to site safe and tugged on it to make sure it was bolts down
