Thread: Firearms in vehicle when travelling on Ferry

Can somebody clarify if you can travel with firearms in your car when crossing with the Ferry to the South Island ?

From memory, carriage contract says you hsve to hand firearms to crew for the crossing.

I guess most just leave them in their unattended car.

This changed with the new rules i believe? from police point of view

Correct, legally firearms can be left in locked car on the ferries (and if complying with the other new rules around disabling/locks etc). But the ferry companies may have other rules so best to ask them.

Frankly it's best to remove bolt, or lock a lever action, and cable lock it to vehicle (load anchors work well), bury it under everything else, take any bolts with you and stay stum. Lock any ammo in a stout steel box and also cable lock it to vehicle. What other people don't know about they can't steal or access. Declare it and tell the world- oh, and invite a whole lot of rigamarole. Discretion is the best part of valor methinks.

Good old common sense

last time i traveled across i told them when signing in and gave the bolts to the crew to lock away for the journey.

Teh secure storage guidance doc has specific info for passenger ferry trips.

Surprised at the number of hunters I've met over the last couple of weeks who have zero idea of law change. Mostly farmers and others that don't do Facebook or Forums. Rifles on the seat with ammo and belt.

3.1.3 Passenger Ferry
1. If the vehicle is travelling on a passenger ferry, then it can be left unattended for the duration of the journey if the driver and passengers are required to leave the vehicle decks. The vehicle must be locked, the windows must be closed, and the keys must not be left with the vehicle

Precisely what I did.

I would like to think it's what we all have been doing for quite some time and that it is now in regulation is a rare example of lawmakers acknowledging best practice as outlined by actual users.
