Follow up to pump action Dilemma

So I sat in on a call today with my associate while he spoke to a gentleman from the FSA he could not have been more apologetic, for what had occurred previously, he told there had been mistakes made, but they would have to seize the firearm and that no action would be taken against my associate as he had done nothing wrong other than take some very poor advice from an officer during the buyback.
They could not pay compensation that boat had sailed.
To clarify he had tried to surrender it once but was sent home with it, it was then inspected in his safe 8 months ago and he was again told all good, he then registered within 30 days of his renewal visit so 7 months ago and whoever took the details never indicated there was any issues when registering it, the chap from FSA said it was picked up as a banned gun in an audit last week.
He did tell us this was not an isolated case and that we would be shocked by how many restricted firearms are being picked up when registered.
Any way to wrap it up the firearms surrender has been organised and the police officers at the appropriate station will be informed that no action is to be taken against my associate when he surrenders the gun to them.
This apart from the fact he will get no compensation, has been handed reasonably in my estimation by the chap whom with we spoke today .

Well that's about as good of an out come you can hope for really. There will be lots of cases like that where the owner isn't seriously into their firearms as others, I have actually come across one when a guy was showing me his small collection. i said do you realize what this one is he said yes and rattled of what it was. Then i asked him did he realize that it was banned and you'll find yourself in the shit if you get caught with it. He was totally unaware and freaked out wondering what to do. I rang a friend that's a cop and explained the situation and there were no dramas he just had to hand it in.

Glad to hear no action is being taken against your friend.
Sad that we're at the point where property being confiscated by the government without compensation is considered a reasonable outcome.

Its a shame someone on here wasnt able to step up with the appropriate licence and save this rifle from destruction

So it said in the registry for at least 6 months before someone noticed. One seriously wonders what the FSA are doing, they should be getting daily/weekly/monthly reports on banned firearms.

Yes - you would think that any of the banned types would flash up in red as soon as they are plugged in and the go button whacked...

If you rang up and said you wanted to register your M60, they would say is it a semi auto? and you would say no, and they would say, how many in the magazine and you would say none, its belt fed, and they would say what caliber and you would say three oh eight, and they would say whats that in millimetres, and you would say I dont know, and they would say can you shoot rabbits with it and you say yeah I suppose so, and then they would register it as a Marlin Model 60 .22, because there is an entry for that in the system.

This will cause you trouble further down the line.

No joke, I registered a belt fed auto, online you have the option of detachable magazine, or internal magazine... then you have to have a round count. So I rang them and said it is neither a detachable or internal magazine, they asked the round capacity and I said between 1 and 500 depending on how many links I connect, they told me to enter the belt as a prohibited magazine, so I asked which of the 500 links am I to serialize, that had them stumped. I then informed them that I would under no circumstances be registering it as a prohibited magazine as I do not hold an endorsement allowing me to possess them and don't need a 5am wake up visit one day, nor is a belt considered a magazine by law. So now my belt fed auto is registered as a light machinegun with an internal magazine that has a grand capacity of one whole round of ammunition :D

I did tell them this, though in a slightly more polite way. Surprisingly the guy I spoke with agreed, told me he has very little knowledge of firearms. It's a job and pays some bills I spose.

There was always a perpetual amnesty when surrendering firearms prior to all the legislative change. The above is a giant leap backwards.
I don’t see there should be any stigma around surrendering a firearm, prohibited or other. Assuming no criminal intent/possession of course.

What a unnecessarily stressful process for your friend to go through. I’m glad he’s finally got some resolution.

I would suggest make sure your associate is not alone at the time of the encounter with police , and the whole encounter is videoed to protect your associate from future harrassment.

Interesting that, if as assumed, due to official and personal ignorance, and legislative gaps, there are many "prohibited" firearms still out in firearms civilian land they are not popping up in any problem / terror / misconduct scenarios which just demonstrates the law abiding and responsibility attitudes of the vast body of LFO's. Makes me wonder again what good the new laws are actually achieving.

Um, just wow. I wonder how many times this has happened...

The wag in me would like to suggest that you might have sold yourself short, as 500 rounds seems to be an arbitrarily small number for a linked belt that is potentially endless haha. I recall as a pisstake linking three 500 round belts of 5.56 back in the day.
