If you haven't shot much another way to learn good, safe habits is to visit an indoor range like Howick or Waitakere and shoot some small bore. Howick range has Manukau Sporting Rifle Club - www.msrc.co.nz - who shoot .22's at 25 yards at various targets. You'll learn safety, good shooting techniques and have a spot of fun too.
