Idiots like this give us a bad name that we already have here in Aus. By the time I was 5 years old I learnt that you don't have a loaded gun unless you're about to shoot something. God these idiots make me so angry - everyone has to suffer for morons mistakes.

You'd be surprised how often that exact thing happens here, Dads mate got killed by that exact thing about 7 or 8 years ago. His son who was in his 30's threw a loaded gun on the back seat while the old bloke was standing on the other side and it went off and dead.

If you have an empty breach which I double check with my finger, I hold my finger on the trigger and slowly put the bolt down and it de-cocks the firing pin. I find it the safest way to do things. me and the brother never fuck around though its habit to make sure they are empty but I think as long as you treat every firearm as loaded your not too bad.

Yip I do that too, not pulling the trigger when closed to check though, bit different in my eyes. May one day have one up the spout and boomfa!

Because why cant you just close it? Its not hard to check the chamber close the bolt pulling the trigger to decock it. I like it like that because the bolts with the gun and nothing gets inside

Very simple Toby, cause it's safe and EVERYONE around it knows it is too. Closed bolt? I wonder if it's loaded. I'd rather have crap in the rifle but know it's safe than the other way.

I was in an Auckland gun shop, as a customer, several years ago when a guy came in with a rifle for sale [308 I think]. When he went to pass the rifle to the shop assistant he was asked to "please open the bolt", he did so and a live round popped out and I was close enough for the round to bounce off me before landing on the floor. The shop assistant, fat little fucker that he was, went ballistic, and rightly so...the gun owner standing there with his gob open down to his chest mutters "O shit, I wonder how long that has been in there"
