Nope. Its not a rumor. It appears to be being kept very quiet. Why??? Normally the media would be all over something like this:

Apparently: Early hours Fri morning (1-2am), bunch of pissheads go for a look over the edge of the river bank (Horomanga), spy a 'deer' through the thermal scope and snot another night time hunter (who had left his mate in their 4WD to go look over the edge too). Driver of the 4WD hears the shot and goes to see what is what, sees a bunch of head torches coming down the other bank yipp and yahooing saying they shot a deer...... high powered round has gutted and killed this guy outright.

Very tragic. Should be jail time dished out all round with this flagrant breeching of multiple rules and laws.

Horomunga is notorious for thermals, spot lights etc. I wouldn't leave the tent at night thats for sure.

I know of people who have strings of lights around campsite for just that very reason...... sad but true.

    Tragic, unnecessary and entirely preventable.
