Thread: Import permit, is it required for a bipod ?

I know this might seem like a silly question but in the current climate you just never know.
I have a friend who is in the states at the moment and he is bringing a few bits and pieces back for me.
I was thinking about getting him to pick up a bipod whilst he was there.
Will it require a permit to be bought back to NZ ? will he be allowed to leave the USA with it in his baggage ?

I needed one for a sling "because it fits to a firearm" so if they use the same logic I would say you do.............

yes, i had to get a permit for my last bipod... and the pod lock and the quick mount... its nuts

How do you go about getting a permit?
I’m heading back to NZ soon and would like to bring back a scope in my luggage.

Just get a really long telephoto lens and mount a camera on it and show them it is for holding things steady (Dont tell them its for taking pics of their wife through the bathroom window as that seems to get them a bit pissy......)

I saw on in the 90s that looked like a hunting rifle but had a camera instead of an action and the trigger operated the camera to take pictures of what you were "aiming at"

In this day and age, it could be good for target practise in town where you cannot shoot... but I cannot find anything to show what it was. It even appeared on a "crime" TV episode once as the user had been shot in self defence when the person who was doing "evil deeds" thought he was being aimed at ....

My import permit application for 12ga snap caps was refused by police this morning. "there is no requirement under the arms act 1983 for a permit to import this item".

I do however expect that they will be seized and then I will be in the familiar position of having two government agencies (customs and police) telling me about their drastically different interpretation of the legislation and refusing to talk to each other.

Customs: You need to provide us with a import permit.
Police: There is no requirement for us to issue you a permit.
Me: Police can you please tell customs I do not need a import permit?
Police: No, there is no requirement for us to intercede on your behalf.

Mine will physically be bought back in luggage when my mate returns from the USA so I don't have this issue, what I don't want is for him to get in trouble or worse have my gear confiscated and a lengthy battle to get it....if at all

But you will have your hardcopy letter from Kapiti "refusing" (couldn't they just say "declined") which may assist when doing battle with Customs.

Yeah, been there done that. My stuff came thru totally unmolested though. But snap caps..... Mmmm, they'll intially confuse them with real ammo.

Go to the Police website and download POL 67B.

Apparently you can email your application. I did mine at the local cop shop.

Make sure you fill in the section asking for your reason to import a prohibited item - yeah I know a std scope isn't but I didn't put a reason and initially got bounced.

Refusal letter for snap caps??? Are you f#%king serious!?
