    It's a PASS!

Stoked to get a 30/30 on the Firearms Licence Safety Training Course last night in Dunedin. I was very surprised by the turnout - there must have been at least 40 people there. Just need to get the application in now - hopefully it's not too drawn out a process...

    Congrats.
Real guns start with the number 3 or bigger and make two holes, one in and one out

40 man how often do they run that?
Hope you get good public service from your department down there.
Seems not so good from what I hear in other parts of the country.

Lets hope not..! I'm putting the application in today but with it being the Christmas period I imagine it'll be quite a bit slower than usual - but we'll see...

I think they run one per month. The Arms Officer here is certainly good to deal with, responds quickly to questions and is approachable. I was a little surprised with how 'light' the course was prior to the test. There was the standard video and then the guy taking it took us through the 7 Rules and highlighted particular areas of them, linked them to experiences he had had etc. - but I thought for some reason it would be a bit more in-depth... There was only the one time the guy taking it engaged his audience with asking a person in the front row a direct question, and she got it wrong. Potentially it would better to ask people more specific questions prior to the test to highlight certain things. Even if he had picked me to ask a question and I ended up looking a bit of a prick, at least it highlights the danger and do's/don'ts which everyone else learns from - particularly as there were quite a lot of younger people in the group (late teens / early 20's). But there you go - I'm just starting out so what do I know! Just my perception/opinion of the way the course could potentially be improved...

The course/test I just did was very different. Only four of us attending, and we didn't have a video. The whole thing was basically the instructor engaging us individually with questions, and encouraging us to ask our own. He went through the basic seven rules, and showed us some firearms from his personal collection. We also got stories about firearms accidents and how they could have been avoided.

Compared to some of the horror stories of safety courses I've heard/read, mine was really good.

Good to see that the courses are still happening after MSC pulled the pin (or whatever actually happened)

Goes to show there's not a lot of generic delivery of the course then... Perhaps they should have a maximum number attending to ensure whoever is delivering gets at least some interaction with everyone. To be honest I thought the video was a mandatory aspect, although the guy did say it was now outdated...
