a 17month old temuka child was shot in the back of the head by his father who was removing a loaded air rifle from a wardrobe. the child has been flown to starship hospital.
my comments are unprintable , but i will say this - if humans are the so called most intelligent of all mammmal species ,the rest are rooted!

As long as we have weapons we will have accidents, but this sort of accident is too tragic for words and we the gun owners will pay in some little way down the track for every one of them.

why have a child anywhere near you when you handle any bloody weapon.cousin came round today ,bloody keen shooter -training his grandson whose smackin em over whilst grandad takes some exceptional photography and his reaction was just to shake his head.
hes 73 ,i turn 60 2weeks today and when i was a kid ,the fucking rule was simple -you dont touch or even go near a firearm unless an adult told you and even then you stayed bloody still.
Mine are all in my mancave ,and my rule is simple -If i dont like you -about turn and fuck off you aint even gonna get a sniff of gunoil.
even my own clan (all adults) will not touch my guns nor my chainsaws without my ok- to do so will provoke a charge worthy of any scrub bull with PMT herpes or just fuckin plain bad attitude -I kid you not .I can kill myself easily with either but thats my mistake my doing -I wont accept anyone even getting an injury If those weapons bear my name as I AM RESPONSIBLE-and that fucking includes my air rifle and my BB gun.
MY POINT- whoever put that air rifle away loaded-we dont know -but ultimately as the adult in the house our role is to set an example whatever it is ,especially in dangerous situations. my kids NEVER touch BBgun or airrifle without my OK or me being present. no ifs buts or exceptions! why decide to take the thing out without being aware of the immediate surrounds first.

New Zealand dad accidentally shoots toddler son in the back of the head
A New Zealand father has accidentally shot his 17-month-old son in the back of the head with an air rifle as he was taking it out of a bedroom wardrobe.
The toddler is in a stable condition in Auckland's Starship Children's Hospital, The Timaru Herald reports.
Police are investigating the incident, which happened on Friday night at Temuka, two hours south of Christchurch.
It is not illegal to own an air rifle without a licence, the newspaper reports.
"As an air rifle was taken out of a wardrobe, it was discharged, hitting a child in the back of the head," Sergeant Geoff McCrostie said.
Canterbury Rural Area Commander Inspector Dave Gaskin said although air rifles could be bought without a firearms licence, "they are not toys and can cause serious harm when used incorrectly"

Can any of you honestly say that they have NEVER handled a firearm and assumed it was unloaded, or NEVER had the muzzle of a firearm sweep another person ?

I think we'd all confess to making a dum decision with a firearm at least once. I admit I'm pretty paranoid about safety, and I make sure my son / mates are the same. Don't want to cast stones here, maybe a single act of carelessness with tragic consequences. Personally I don't think, if it were me, I'd want to pick up a firearm again. Hope the kid recovers.
I can honestly say I have never put away or secured a loaded and cocked firearm.
No excuse for that kind of stupidity.

perfectly understandable the guy is feeling shit etcetc.That I dont dispute. yes i fucked up once and put a .22 round through our then kitchen ceiling 930yrs ago),but now due to adverse publicity i make it a point to handle all my firearms safely and in accordance with law.my air rifle is not in my gun cabinet ,but i do check the bloody thing everyday -Is it secure ,Has someone been tampering etcetc .That too is because even wa wee chinese cheapo like that can kill.Id never store the bloody thing cocked cause i have another in the shed that has a stuffed spring ,cause its previous paranoid owner kept it permannently coked&loaded due to having some unscrupulous assholes after him.
I know ive ranted but my point remains unequivocal- as a bloody adult we are responsible for the safe storage and use of firearms -hiding it in a wardrobe is NOT secure storage IMHO.
+1 my air rifle is locked in my safe, partner has here nieces/nephews over every now & then, they are curious little people and might 'find it' if its in a wardrobe/closet.....be safe people!!!!!!

I did once accidentally wave a shotgun in the direction of my mate when I was on my way back from checking a paper target. He pulled me up on it and I bull-crapped until he seemed satisfied (it was empty but that was not my finest hour).
As for this guy though... I'm trying to think of a single scenario of why that airgun came to be loaded and left. Got nothin'. Even if kids did put it away like that, why did he leave it where they could get to it???
I've heard stories of spring air rifles going off on their own if they are cocked for too long and/or not being properly maintained.. Air guns need cleaned and oiled to!Quote:

Also bragged to me about shooting a deer at 80 meters when all he could see was a patch of orange through the bush...."But I knew it was a deer, cos I watched it for 5 minutes and could see it breathing"

Point I am making is that even people who have been around firearms for many years can make the most basic errors.

Amazing gun in a wardrobe, one of the first things to be packed when I emigrate is my gun cabinet and ammo safe, all springer air rifles van be de cocked and left with the pellet in them if it's difficult to get out, or just let it off into the ground, Jez they are so cheap to buy, as to a 3030 going off when his finger slipped off the hammer, I have done this once myself, there is no safety on the old Marlins like mine, it why you always point it to the ground, same should apply to all guns, what ever they are.

My heart goes out to this family - I cannot imagine the stress and regret they must be experiencing right now. At some point in the chain if events, someone was negligent, and it lead to a tragedy unfolding. We can all take a lesson from this and should do so.
I've experienced a negligent discharge, although thankfully there were no injuries. All it takes is a single incorrect assumption or a lapse in dilligence. Numerous friends and associates have as well - almost all with semi auto pistols.
I believe that if you handle firearms regularly enough, the odds of something like this happening increases, to the point where your number will come up. Just pray that on that day, you are fortunate enough to get away without an injury, let alone a fatality.
