    License Surrender

I might not have this 100% correct but hopefully someone will help me with this
Late last year I saw a post about someone who had voluntarily surrendered their license due to some personal reasons and was then having trouble getting it back

could someone please point me in the right direction for this post

    cheers

Can't help with the post, but as far as my understanding of the current legislation as it stands - the two forms of licensing set down in the Arms Act are relicensing of currently licensed persons and first time license applications.

Relicensing is effectively a check that circumstances haven't changed, referees are still cooing correctly and security is up to standard.

First time licensing is the entire delve into the applicant's background and circumstances - it's unfortunately not a case of a previously licensed person "getting their licence back". Important distinction. The fact that it wasn't a revocation of the licence by the regulator is a positive but even so if there was a circumstance that required it that would be a large point of consideration for a "first time" application and the fact that the person was previously licensed is just one item in the package of safety considerations going forwards. Basically the applicant would need to be able to demonstrate that the situation that caused them to reach the decision to surrender is mitigated/controlled/no longer a relevant circumstance which in a lot of cases is not that easy. This is my understanding of the process anyway - I'm happy to be corrected on this!

Difficult to know what you meant by "surrendered for some personal reasons", and I have no recollection of such a post.

    My own experience was this.
Yes, I did voluntarily surrender my licence, for personal reasons.
The reason - I was invited to an overseas employment oportunity that meant I would be away from the country for quite some time. I took up the employment oportunity AND surrendered my licence.
It turned out to be 20 plus years of good fortune!
Upon completion of my employment contract I returned to NZ and reapplied for my firearms licence. Easy peasy. Even got my original licence number, from the time that E cat licences were issued. Didn't have to learn a new number - the old one is stuck in my memory bank.
