A live mortar blown up in Bay of Plenty was 'still highly explosive'

Who's the idiot who thought live or unchecked bombs should be on display ?

A leaky and explosive mortar found in the Bay of Plenty has police urging people to be cautious with war memorabilia.

Whakatane police on Wednesday were called to check out a leaking mortar.

"We received a call from someone at an address in Commerce Street, Whakatane, asking that we check two mortar shells that were on display at a pistol range at a hall," a police spokesperson said.

The New Zealand Defence Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called. Team members found the mortar to be "still highly explosive" and it was disposed of at Coastlands Beach.

A number of other items on display were also deemed to be unsafe, police said.

Police said anyone with concerns about memorabilia should not try to move it but should call police immediately.

Bloody hell that would be a circus! My mate found live 303 in a display rifle not to far from here! Was discreet and told the organiser who removed it! No dramas!

More fucking crap reporting. A mortar is a smooth bored muzzle loaded weapon that fires mortar bombs at a high trajectory over a short distance. I reckon it was probably a mortar bomb that they are talking about. Bloody media Dickheads.

What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

i regularly suffer the herald online and the majority of stories that i read have terrible spelling and or grammar mistakes. the editor, who should be an expert and highly protective of his or her reputation/trade as an editor should be ashamed and embark on a solo pilgrimage of redemption across the largest and driest desert available at the time.

I attribute this to the ability to edit after they get the facts. Often it pays to screen shot an article as later when the real facts come out they can edit it to fit. The editor is not really needed. The editor used to be responsible for upholding the reputation of what was printed. They had to check facts, grammar and spelling as getting these wrong would damage their reputation or even lead to legal issues.

Nowadays in the rush to get it out there first, they don't waste time editing as they can fix it later. Spell checker helps too. And lets face it, half of the population now wouldn't know grammar and spelling issues anyway...let alone bother to get their facts correct.
