Hopefully he makes it!
Yeh that isn’t much to go on. I hope he recovers well and I hope he is not my ex brother in law who lives down that way. The odds would be fairly long.
I see they have charged someone in relation to this incident.
@vietnamcam I may have cocked up. I can't find anything but I am sure I read it yesterday that Police had laid charges. I apologise for any mix up. Wasn't trying to spread any rumors.
Was an article on stuff yesterday. Victim ( Name suppressed ) still in serious condition. No suspicious circumstances according to police and an individual appeared in Nelson District court yesterday ( Monday )

Looks to be in a bad way.
sounds naasty alright, lucky to walk and may still loose leg!!!
Heard shot while otherr guy loading his rifle before the hunt from the sounds.
Have a mate who is mates with the shot man- I've been into the Hospital up here in Welly to say hi- he was doing well Thursday when I saw him before surgery. Its going to be a long recovery. I'm not going to comment on what happened or may have happened but the dude is alive. Only two people on the planet know exactly what happened.I'm fairly neither here nor there when it comes to media reports about what occurred, especially "Stuff" articles and their accuracy.
Ants
Well, i see the guy gone to court and it appears they arrived at the hunting area early. still dark.
The rifles were in the back seat, and they got out to get ready for the hunt.
The guy being charged loaded his mag with 3 rounds, put it in his rifle then they stating he placed one in the chamber and shut the bolt and the rifle then went off,
shooting his mate in the upper leg and the round then ended up in the rear door. (Appears shot in the car or just outside)
Now, WTF.
Why the hell would you load a live round into the chamber, while its still dark and then it goes off pointed at the other guy ffs, esp as you havnt even started the hunt yet or seen a animal etc.
Two things come to mind when i think about this.
1 The reporter has done a bad job of actually reporting what happened . They making a point in court that it was bad light and the guy was very tired.
I cant see what that has to do with it unless when he loaded the mag in all he was doing was actually just shutting the bolt and as he was "tired"and couldnt see great he loaded a live round in the chamber
by accident and didnt actually know it was loaded etc....possible?
2 Or, if he actually was that dumb to load a live round in and shut the bolt while it was still dark and still at the car something else was going on.
1,Either something like they were in the process of getting ready for spotlighting or having it loaded if they were going up the road further and being ready to shoot a deer if they saw one
2 mm... maybe it was just the first point, a accident cause i cant think any reason why you load a mag in, then load a live round in the chamber then shut the bolt and somehow it goes off in the back seat pointed at someone while you not actually hunting and its still dark.....anyone?
3 Or there story isnt actually the full story what happened and something else went on.
Anyway, glad the guy survived and maybe the full story will come out more when he appears in court again soon as it doesnt add up unless its the first point, which i find more likely, shut the bolt half asleep and loaded a live round in by accident as the report in the paper from the court suggests he placed one in the chamber and shut the bolt on purpose ...prob loikely bad reporting
From the word on the street, I heard it was a 7mm Rem Mag, and that they had seen a deer on the way in and were heading on down to see if it was still there
........thats excitement coupled with inexperience for ya (poor bugger)
Man that will be a frickn mess
OH men, something to learn from..

I know a guy that was shot with a 243 at a hundred odd meters, lost his leg. A 7mmRM at point blank must be fucken horrific, poor guy.
A lesson to choose who you hang around with in terms of how they handle firearms
