A young man who accidentally shot himself in the leg was transported to Middlemore Hospital in a serious condition this afternoon.

The man, in his 20s, was hunting near Mangatawhiri with friends when he injured himself in a remote bush area.

He sustained serious wounds to his leg and a tourniquet was tied around it.

The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter and police Eagle helicopter helped with the rescue shortly after 2pm.

A spokesman for the rescue helicopter said intensive care paramedic Marcel Driessen and Dr Nick Longley were dropped down into a paddock nearby.

The hill's terrain was too steep for the helicopter to land and thick bush restricted their access, the spokesman said.

The wounded man was treated by medical staff and eventually winched up into the rescue helicopter and flown to Middlemore.

It was clearly a case of mistaken identity - he mistook his leg for the target.

Making people aware of at least one of the seven basic rules...always point your firearm in a safe direction or maybe ‘load when ready to fire..’ ....who knows..

I think they would all have an application.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!
Rule 1: Treat every firearm as loaded
Rule 2: Always point firearms in a safe direction
Rule 3: Load a firearm only when ready to fire
Rule 4: Identify your target beyond all doubt
Rule 5: Check your firing zone
Rule 6: Store firearms and ammunition safely
Rule 7: Avoid alcohol and drugs when handling firearms

A guy I knew years ago did the same thing albeit not how you would think.
He initially had problems with a dicky left elbow I think from a motorbike accident. After getting it sorted, I think from surgery, he checked with the doctor if it was alright to go hunting etc.
    yes he was told.
Anyhoo here he is out hunting lining up on a pig with the 308 and the previously mentioned dicky elbow gave way.
Rifle came down and the weight came onto the trigger finger just as it lined up on the lower part of one of his legs.
Big hole and about a 3k walk out to transport. He is a bit of a hard looking thing and obviously has a fair ticker on him too
Short story made long surgeons operated heaps of times trying to save the leg. Lots and lots of pain.
After some advice from an amputee with similar experience he made them chop it off and with a bucket on the stump he was driving a bulldozer within the week.
    Nickname was pegleg.
Not all accidents are straight out negligence.

The standard of English and punctuation is atrocious among journalists. Did he also shoot off one of his balls?
