    A friend had a very targeted theft recently.Workshop broken into cctv hard drive taken.Gas axe used to cut into locked shipping container then into the gun safe.I think he lost 6-7 firearms in that one.The attitude from the cops has been interesting with not a great deal of interest in solving this.I doubt hidden serial numbers or micro dots will help the return of guns in future crimes unless it was something we all did making firearms worthless.But that is not the reason they are stolen in the first place and lets face it crims don't care or have little regard for the consequences.

    What happens - if - you sell it?
    I'm just thinking of 3-4 hand after you, it gets used in a crime, DNA registered against you, etc....

    Don't get me wrong, I like the concept, it's just the unintended consequences bit.

    How on earth do they support their claim to 83% reduction in burglaries ?
    Surely it can only help point the finger and return stolen goods.

    I like the idea but the claim seems a bit rich.

    Good point, but doesn't answer the question about preventing burglary as the concept is not just limited to protecting only firearms, but other property also.

    Why anyone would want a stolen gun back is beyond me. Not saying I don’t want the police to recover it from the shitkickers that either stole it or subsequently bought it, but once they do, throw that shit in the bin.

    It would never be the same.

    @Proudkiwi

    Suppose it depends on the excess of one's house contents insurance. Not sure how I'd feel having my gun back after it taking a trip to the local gang pad. Hard to tell as I've never had any burglarised items returned.

    Nope. Any rifle that costs less than your average excess could only be considered a disposable item. Again, throw that shit in the bin.

    I thought things like serial numbers could be etched back from the ground off bit.

    @Russian 22

    Dosvidanye. Yes, you have to grind the steel down about or more than 3x the original depth of the stamped letters/numbers to lose them completely to acid recovery techniques... and that starts getting down to where it might weaken the gun and you might get nervous about firing it after grinding. Some crims may of course just attempt to obliterate the numbers by overstamping, a harder nut to crack. I like the suggestion by @canross about RFID chips. They are cheap as, just go to the scrap yard and get some modern car keys and each has a chip embedded you can use.
