MSC just sacked all its volunteers.

just back from the road show with the head of the mountain safety council.
long story short we will all be replaced by paid staff, delivering to less than a third of the current locations.
    Yay!

What is the logic behind such a move?

Sorry Greg, I "like to dislike", your last paragraph is the best, "I am so mad I could just scream"
I am very sorry to hear it, I been a "student" in my branch 4 years ago and my instructors (Paul Damon and Peter "Dodgy" Henderson) was the best I could ask for.
Good luck to us with the outcome ahead.

Yeah.. I've seen some emails from N and M come through regarding the roadshow and a number of blatantly false statements being made to justify the new direction.

To even think they can replace the work of 500 competent and trained volunteers with 5 (full) or 45 (part-time) paid contractors is just ridiculous.

I was an alpine, bush and abseil instructor with MSC back in the late 90's early 2000's. I am sorry to hear of where they are going. It seems to be very corporate and jobs for the boys. It will effectively be a an NZOIA takeover.

So potentially a new hurdle for those looking to get their firearms license?

Don't think firearms have been affected.

I'm thinking in terms of getting to attend the required safety course if there is gonna be less than a tenth of the usual number of instructors.

I read somewhere that police are now working with ex MSC instructors to deliver the FAL courses, I think they have given up on MSC too (but this was on the interwebby so could just be bollocks too)

One can project a lot of information via Facebook and YouTube these days. Hopefully they harness these media in an intelligent and informative manner.
