just back from the road show with the head of the mountain safety council.
long story short we will all be replaced by paid staff, delivering to less than a third of the current locations.
Yay!
i am so mad i could just scream!

I wish I could say I was surprised but after what happened to N and M a while back I'm not

Yeah.. I've seen some emails from N and M come through regarding the roadshow and a number of blatantly false statements being made to justify the new direction.
To even think they can replace the work of 500 competent and trained volunteers with 5 (full) or 45 (part-time) paid contractors is just ridiculous.
How often did the MSC volunteer instructors undergo continuing training or refreshers ?
To what standard was their competency as instructors and adherence to content assessed ?
I've had both good (bushcraft & river safety) and bad (firearms) experiences with MSC courses....

i am sorry i cant give you numbers now, but the assesment prosess is done about every 2 to 3 years, trainers are vetted by designated vetters to ensure the few islolated cases of a bad experence are not continued.
ongoing training and support was cordinated from msc head office and channeled thru the district cordinators.
the system was going very well untill the new head came along and flicked all the staff who were "the old guard" leaving no support for the districts and thats when they started to quit and go independantly.
the trainers quitting suited him perfectly because it reaffirmed his case that volunteers were "unreliable"
the current 500 ish members deliver approxamatly 12000 licence courses a year, you dont hear about the 11950 "good" sessions, but the 50 bad ones everyone hears about. remember these are volunteers, and they are human. sometimes we all have a bad day.
Absolute shame!
Boom, cough,cough,cough
What is the logic behind such a move?

"Hunting and fishing" fucking over licenced firearms owners since ages ago.

Sorry Greg, I "like to dislike", your last paragraph is the best, "I am so mad I could just scream"
I am very sorry to hear it, I been a "student" in my branch 4 years ago and my instructors (Paul Damon and Peter "Dodgy" Henderson) was the best I could ask for.
Good luck to us with the outcome ahead.

Probably health and safety oh and money, I hope you local guys managed to hold on to the funds you had, I know of one lot that distributed theres to the members, as they raised it!

I was an alpine, bush and abseil instructor with MSC back in the late 90's early 2000's. I am sorry to hear of where they are going. It seems to be very corporate and jobs for the boys. It will effectively be a an NZOIA takeover.
So potentially a new hurdle for those looking to get their firearms license?
Don't think firearms have been affected.
