    Attended one thing where the person doing the 'safety presentation' insisted that down was the safe direction. I asked him if that included standing on rock or concrete or worse, steel tread sections... Blank look and crickets.

    Safe direction, is one of those things where the rules got a bit confused in my viewpoint - should only be chambered and locked in battery when "ready to fire" in which case your safe direction is towards the intended target. And then you are always assessing your backing area and the remaining cone of fire.
