I saw a very good safety idea for transporting firearms on a youtube film last week.
The bloke had a couple of bolt action rifles.
He left the bolts in so they wouldn't get lost or left at home, but what he did to make this safe was to lock each rifle with a cable type padlock. The cable being threaded through the magazine well so that the bolt could not close. A chamber flag was used as well.
This also solved the problem of what to do when leaving firearms in a vehicle while dashing into a shop for a pie.
