I think the news is very promising.

To get the firearms act replaced within this term means firearms owners can't just do nothing, they will need to do submissions and participate, we have to support Nicole and this will be how we do it.
I'm looking forward to the review of the registry, all those that have registered their firearms and have had incorrect information entered because the correct information wasn't in the menu will need to speak up and participate in the review. How can a registry be effective when the information is incorrect, and if it doesn't matter that that information isn't correct then why is that information needed.

We, as firearm owners need to participate, apathy isn't an option if we want good outcomes.

That is one shit load of work in 4 bullet points. The planner in me spots that most are on the critical path.
1. Transfer responsibility for Arms Act policy and regulation to the MoJ and administration to Internal Affairs or other. This is a big job to get the changes in place, funded, staffed and ready to go. Six months would be a tight time frame.
2. Commence a review the effectiveness of the Firearms Registry by June 2024. This can't really start until item 1 is complete because it is the MoJ that will drive the policy work.
3. Immediately begin to repeal and replace Part 6 of the Arms Act relating to Clubs and Ranges. See item 2. No doubt some discussion documents can be circulated but the real work wont start until item one is complete.
4. Rewrite the Arms Act and pass it through all stages in this term of Parliament. This looks like a stretch target, more aspirational than real. All the work needs to be compressed into about 18 months form June 2024 to December 2025. National wont want anything contentious going through Parliament in 2026. Until item 4 has been accomplished registration will remain.

As well as the tight time frame there is National slashing and burning budgets and staffing to pay for the tax cuts after their Foreign Buyer Tax got the arse not to mention the grandstanding and chest beating by the two minor coalition parties trying to stave of obliteration in the 2026 election. Please make sure that your seat belt is fastened and your tray table in the upright position as it will be a bumpy ride.

The best thing we can do is to recruit more shooters and hunters into the sport,let's not let this chance go by.

Act was shrewd enough to capitalise on the shooters vote just as we were being thrown under the bus,Nicole ticks all the boxes we need and can deflect alot of the " wokesters and Mummies" usual rhetoric by virtue of who she is.

Imagine 500,000 shooters by the next election, its a big goal but its not impossible.

I am concerned about the proposed transfer of functions from Police to the Dept of Internal Affairs (DIA).
I strikes me as out of the pan into the fire.

I have previously seen worked DIA work on other issues and proposals.
I was and am very unimpressed (to say the least) with the work of DIA.
DIA staff's lack of competency and predetermined bias was both surprising and disappointing.
You make think DIA will be better than Police regarding management & administration of firearms regulation and law & I hope they will be but I am fearful that they won't be.
I am fearful that the transfer will be another opportunity for the anti-gun lobby to get their hands on the reins of power which won't be good for us.

TeRei made a good point in a previous post: Just like the seperation of powers in Government it is necessary for gun rights to be removed from the police who have assumed a role of judge and executioner.

While all of the drama of the last six weeks was unfolding I remembered a clip on TV of NZ First marching out of their caucus with National. A quick search revealed that this was the demise of the National NZ First coalition formed after the 1996 election. This was our first MMP election in which National had received 44 seats (sound familiar) and NZ First 17 seats (including all 5 of the Maori seats). The opposition consisted of Labour, ACT in their first election, Alliance including the Greens and United NZ. There was one leader still in Parliament. You guessed it Winston Peters an ex National MP.
Will history repeat itself? I don't know but it will be interesting watching.

I HOPE.....that the delay in getting things nailed down...has that senario sorted...it WAS MENTIONED in one of the press conferences,having a built in and signed off ability to agree to dissagree with each other but it is to be done civilly back stage and get sorted not airing dirty laundry in public...that was my take on what was said anyway.

On the other hand, DIA has some people that are VERY competent and experienced and has had technology projects that have been very successfully implemented in the past. If any agency has the background and resourcing to take this on, it's DIA.

We all need to be part of the solution but I see little of that in HB unfortunately. There still seems to be a lot of small groups or clubs wanting their own private range rather than grouping together to do something decent as has happened in other areas. Currently their seems to be a belief that the new government will turn the clock back to what we had before and I don't see much chance of that especially after reading Nicole's statement. I wish this wasn't so.

All I can say is Nicole McKee has worked bloody tirelessly on our behalf. She is a legend. This news can only be viewed as outstanding and for once its good news. ACT have listened to us.

They went from a single mp to double digits in short order.

Why?

They spoke common sense, they said what alot of hard working kiwis thought and called out the nonsense.

This is all great news for the first time in what feels like a very long time. Let's remember to back them up and show support. They listened to us. If we do not support them do not expect them to back us again.

By the same token - ACT now has to delivery on its rhetoric.

"We" may have put them there , but "they" will do what politicians do and chase whatever makes them look best.

Seen it all before - hope for the best but dont feel disappointed if their best is differant to yours.....

We all took our gun ownership as a right untill it was taken from us,now its a privilage.Lack of a united front made that easier to do than it otherwise could have been.
As firearms owners we need to understand that individual financial contributions are probably going to be needed by all of us to fund those who will lobby on our behalf. I would love to see retailers get behind this by publically donating a portion of retail sales or advertising products from which a donation coulød be made at purchase.

As a group we are far better educated and motivated than we were pre 2019 as well as now being in a position where block voting has made a difference.

Absolutely spot on. Ministry (to promote) Hunting and Fishing is a hopeful start.

Buried within the UN Agenda 2030 SDGs (Sustainably Development Goals) there are oblique references to 85% of small arms being in civilian hands, and when you dig into the educational resources being provided by the UN for our children, disarming civilian populations makes an appearance as critical to "safety". Read into that what you will.

What's interesting to the UN argument, is there is no mention of Govt-level supply of arms to militias and the like that end up getting diverted to outfits who use them against other Govt's and the corresponding civilian populations. I'm not sure who is end of line for responsibility for the UN propaganda that they spit out but they really need to take the rose-tinted glasses off and start looking at who and where the 'weapons' get into the countries where they are used like that and what the sources are. I mean, those aren't civilian firearms most of them are of the AK variants and there are a few Colt derivatives and FN designs as well - these things don't magically turn up one morning on the back of a stork with a hallelujah!

It's one of the problems with firearms legislation, dogmatic blind obedience to UN rhetoric just doesn't appear to result in productive, effective control regimes.

I am pleased to see the Ministry of Hunting and Fishing established. It does not matter how many hunters we have in NZ if they don't have a voice it matters little. Many hunters move toward target shooting as they get older, something to be encouraged. It is bums on seats in the shooting and hunting related clubs that gives us a voice. Individuals just don't get heard in the din.

But if the register was refined, made easier and more useable and out of the Police's hands (Nicole-ised) it might be something that will be acceptable for us and appease what I think is a majority that support it. Even better still if the Police and Courts really double down on the things Rushy highlighted, and that's likely under this government too.
