    It's even better than that.

"Immediately begin to repeal and replace Part 6 of the Arms Act 1983 relating to clubs and ranges, rewrite the Arms Act 1983 to provide greater protection of public safety and simplify regulatory requirements to improve compliance, transfer responsibility for the Arms Act 1983 to the Ministry of Justice and the Firearms Safety Authority away from Police, and review whether the Firearms Registry is improving public safety."

I can hear the kicking and screaming now.
Shock, horror. Maybe we're going to go back to the legislation that was already working before NZ Police dropped the ball and seriously f^ked up. And WE got the blame for.

A new Arms Act will, of course, be the best outcome.
    Go Nicole.

    Go, you good guys!

An easy one would be to show how much it was all going to cost.
Plus with tough times, too much of a user pays increase just wouldn't work.
Ergo save your money and put it somewhere that needs it way more.
BTW we know it doesn't improve public safety shit all.
That's just spin talk for the antis

I suspect that is how it will have been sold - "we've got no fucking money, and this is going to cost a fortune for no measurable benefit...."

Glad to see this appear. Very glad, in fact.

I’m surprised about the extent of the announcement.
It takes quite a determined approach and breakthrough to shift such an obstacle.

The registry has quite broad public support having been sold on the basis of "safety" **
I understand why the approach is to review whether the public are going to be any safer from gangland cross-fire with or without an expensive registry.

** also used by the public sector zealots removing parking, building raised pedestrian crossings for $500K etc.

I'm thinking (or is it hoping) that this is to stop the the anti-gun/pro-register lunatics from getting any air time.
If they ditch it in the new year after everyone has forgotten about the election, there should be less push back.

That can still run its own flaming death of cost over runs, minimal benefits and wasting police time.

Not for much longer as police are losing control of firearms completely.

Firearms policy, legislation, and regulations move to Ministry of Justice.
Administration of policy by the Firearms Authority etc. move from Police "to another department such as the Department of Internal Affairs."
