Sad but I have to wonder if it could be related to "horticulture". That area was infamous for growing stuff.
Respect to the fella who heard gunshots and ran towards them with his first aid kit. Former Army medic who may have just saved a young man's life. Hopefully he pulls through. The news is saying they're a pair of pig hunters and a third man is in custody. Tragic situation whatever the cause.
The shooter possibly the guy up there with the pigs?
Latest news says the farmer (the shooter) had had it up to the back teeth with poachers. Very sad all round
Yep Stu the pig man.
Couple of years back I went for a run/walk on the track nearer the top and stopped to talk with some pig hunters and asked them about the pigs on the road just past the water gardens.
They said then that the guy was protective of "his" pigs and that that locals would not hunt in that area.
Having said that my expericance of pig hunters ranges across a spectrum and these guys based on the behaviour of their dogs interacting with my dog they were at the very responsible end of the spectrum.

The flight tracks look like it was the south side of the water park, not the north side where Stu is...
NZ herald is saying two pig hunters have been both shot by a local farmer, who has been picked on by poachers, and pushed to breaking point.
As wise man once said to me, “never point a gun at someone unless you’re prepared to pull the trigger.” (I used to live in the States)
I’m not going to speculate what led to him pulling the trigger on them because it’s pointless.
But as we all hear or read on here by those with farms who suffer at the hands of poachers and thieves, it’s tough, dangerous, and the huge risk of confronting poachers with a gun is you may end up having to use it.
Not a good outcome for any one involved... The deceased will be someone's son, probably someone's brother and possibly someone's Dad.... Merry fookin Christmas... Would hate to be one who has to knock on families door with that news.
Sounds like stu the pig man..
frankly -this time of year is typically when peoples mental health unravels big time and that is based on my frontline experience. ironic aint it "we wish you a merry xmas and festive season ...oops WTF ".the stresses never let up as society demands more even of those less equipped to cope . sad to say but i dont think it will be the last .
The book will get thrown at the guy that pulled the trigger, the point that never gets made is how many calls to the authorities the farmer made in the years leading up to this to try to get the issue sorted.
A lot of times these situations descend into a he said/he said in a courtroom long after the actual event that caused the issue has passed from memory for the general public - and there's going to be a lot of courtroom and lawyer drama here I feel. Probably a self defence argument and a few other things that the powers that be don't like will be brought up and I suspect that this will be a case that might set quite a precedent. Not very good for anyone involved especially at this time of year.
The newshub report from 7 years ago (on YouTube) will go some way to demonstrate that this is a long standing issue and the police have done nothing after all his reports.
Shooting someone is never justified, but many years of this have obviously culminated in the inevitable - something the police should have seen as a likely outcome
Untill the findings are released I think it's best not to speculate. That's for the courts to decide and sadly one person has lost their life.
how long will it be after police crime scene guard leaves before the local scum deal to his stock .
Reminds me of a farmer up north (I think) that was constantly getting gear stolen, he fired a shotgun in their direction and someone got hit (not fataly as far as I remember-but I could be wrong). The farmer had to move to Oz & his land wouldn't sell because it was make known that the next owner would be a target of the same scum.
As already said, shit show for all involved
I think the term Farmer is being rather over used in this case,
Is there a legal threshold on the definition between stock vs wild animals? Gotta be yes? Not that it effects this situation of course.
A pretty grim reminder of what poaching can entail
After coursing the community groups it seems he had recently been harassed by some mobsters known for poaching his animals and staunching him out, compounded with the rest of his issues with locals running his pigs down and the general poaching seems the old gent simply had enough of nothing being done and seeing another pig in the process of being taken was the last straw.
That is speculation from the coromandel community page on Facebook and shouldn’t be taken as word, but it certainly provides the catalyst for an event like this.
I can only imagine the frustration of going to the police time and time again and nothing ever being done and being continuously humiliated by poachers and vandals, and having to literally clean up the insides after them.
Ultimately unfortunate that life or lives have been lost, it’s never ideal, or the outcome anyone should anticipate but clearly it had been brewing for a while over some years.
Seems he’s already been charged Attachment 265107
Also another example of NZ police’s gold standard reactive policing, you’d think they’d have learned by now.
It's still Invasion of Private Property, Armed Trespass, call it what you will but it is way past Breaking & Entering or a Burglary definition. This is "Entitled" Behaviour in the extreme and the consequences for that entitlement have been extreme. Regardless whether he's a Farmer or not, that could be any one of us on any given day and Home Owners/Property Owners should Not have to put up with it. The End.
There seems to be a theme here that what ever happened is justifiable or was inevitable. Really??
As an ordinary citizen and a lawful gun owner that notion sickens me.
Even if they are wild animals, I don't believe that gives you right to take game on private property without permission.
They whole thing is a damn shame. There seems to have been a fair bit of lawless activity in that area of late, 3 or 4 weeks ago there was a carjacking, and a high speed chase involving a ute with a caravan and the police chopper.
I've fed those pigs on several occasions and without wanting to be critical, they wouldn't be my first choice if I was looking for prime pork.
that was out of towners on a bit of a crime spree...... up there was where it finished not where it started......
but yes there are some feral types and a degree of lawlessness up there on and around the 309...we knew something was up when half a dozen skodys went flying past work and all you could glimpse was kitted up cops and buttstocks thru the windows.i get annoyed with the medias take when things like this happen citing "tight knit community" blabla what a crock of shit i noticed on the footage a couple of burnt out utes .
the details will start leaking out over the next few weeks because people cant help themselves they all like to pride themselves on knowing everything about everyone.....im sure other parts of nz are the same
My take on this for what it's worth. And I'll be clear that my opinion can change as more info is made available.
Ive watched the piece on this guy and his pigs from 2018 and its clear there has been a long standing issue and that members of the public were helping and looking after him.
That the poaching has and was considered to be almost a jail sentence for him it was so extreme.
Without making a comment on what's gone on in the last days. I feel there is a failure in community policing in the area that has allowed a well know situation to escalate too this point.
The local riff raff KNOW to leave his pigs alone...I asked one of them who is very near n dear to me...my heart was in mouth when I saw the news as thought I may have funeral to organise. As said earlier the deceased was someone's son so no up side to this.
I understand and agree with what you are saying.
I also know that this tragic event didn't happen in isolation. There is a significant back story to it.
Further to that and without knowing all the details, regardless as to whether they are taking rabbits, pheasants or deer and pigs. Strangers carrying guns on private property without permission is a dangerous and frightening event.
I have enormous sympathy for those who have to deal with that on an isolated or semi regular basis
Does anybody know for sure if it was stu the pig man who was involved?
This is under name suppression. People shouldn't go identifying who it is.
@whanahuia
Absolutely bang on
"The true measure of a society can be found in how it treats it's most vulnerable members." Is a quote that often springs to mind when I read the news these days. This man (if it is who I believe it to be) seems to be more than a little eccentric and quite likely neuro-diverse, and it is extremely sad that he was pushed to this level of desperation by an element of society that appears to believe that they have the right to do what they want, when they want with impunity. I don't profess to know what the solution is but our society needs to take a serious look at itself.
The thing with this is that it's not just a Coromandel issue - many many rural parts of NZ have a major issue with trespass by people who are chasing animals onto land that they don't have permission to be on. It's becoming more of an issue in the modern age with H&S laws and the consequences for business managers and 'officers' who must take all practical steps to keep people safe. If you have people in areas that they don't have any right to be in the consequences are a little bit concerning. I am not aware of any test case on this yet, and a lot of people are wary of being the first...
Not something that should have been let to get to the point where it ended up in a fatality - on the other hand what can be done? As far as I'm aware even CCTV footage isn't enough to secure a conviction of trespass in a situation like this, so a landowner is forced to confront trespassers to do anything about it. It's a stupid situation and asking for trouble, as if you want the problem to stop as the landowner you really don't have any choice but to confront people who you know are armed in some form as they are dealing with large animals. Something really needs to change to have more of a deterrent to stop idiots from trespassing in the first place so it doesn't become the 'accepted normal' - and 'nah it's OK bro'.
On the money there No3 - esp your second paragraph. unfortunately i have quite a resume in that field and i want out of that scene, particularly after the last nose to nose where the poacher was on P or something. I think a lot of people dont realise how hostile some of these types can be, but you have no choice but to confront them. I wont go into (the many) details on a public forum but i feel real sorry that old guy being put into that situation. I think i need to make an appointment with our MP
