Sad but I have to wonder if it could be related to "horticulture". That area was infamous for growing stuff.

Coromandel Green could very well have been a factor.

Respect to the fella who heard gunshots and ran towards them with his first aid kit. Former Army medic who may have just saved a young man's life. Hopefully he pulls through. The news is saying they're a pair of pig hunters and a third man is in custody. Tragic situation whatever the cause.

Latest news says the farmer (the shooter) had had it up to the back teeth with poachers. Very sad all round

Couple of years back I went for a run/walk on the track nearer the top and stopped to talk with some pig hunters and asked them about the pigs on the road just past the water gardens.
They said then that the guy was protective of "his" pigs and that that locals would not hunt in that area.
Having said that my expericance of pig hunters ranges across a spectrum and these guys based on the behaviour of their dogs interacting with my dog they were at the very responsible end of the spectrum.

The flight tracks look like it was the south side of the water park, not the north side where Stu is...

NZ herald is saying two pig hunters have been both shot by a local farmer, who has been picked on by poachers, and pushed to breaking point.

As wise man once said to me, “never point a gun at someone unless you’re prepared to pull the trigger.” (I used to live in the States)

I’m not going to speculate what led to him pulling the trigger on them because it’s pointless.
But as we all hear or read on here by those with farms who suffer at the hands of poachers and thieves, it’s tough, dangerous, and the huge risk of confronting poachers with a gun is you may end up having to use it.

Not a good outcome for any one involved... The deceased will be someone's son, probably someone's brother and possibly someone's Dad.... Merry fookin Christmas... Would hate to be one who has to knock on families door with that news.

frankly -this time of year is typically when peoples mental health unravels big time and that is based on my frontline experience. ironic aint it "we wish you a merry xmas and festive season ...oops WTF ".the stresses never let up as society demands more even of those less equipped to cope . sad to say but i dont think it will be the last .

Combined with the time of year when others are looking for some well fed Christmas ham, a bad mix.
