That would have been the old cordite .303 ammo - the stuff with the ball powder in it was a whole lot more refined and better socialised. The cordite strands were delayed by the fact of being in the brass case, with the heat coming in from all around outside the case the cordite lights over it's whole length at once vs with a flame from a primer at one end of the case only.
