Now wheres that last round i had ?

A few years ago ....
I used too hunt the odd pig . 3 dogs , a mate and a spot across lake taupo .
On one trip , we got a small boar quite quickly . Now it was my usual habit to stick pigs rather than shoot them , lest a dog got accidently shot . But we would take a short barrelled 303 for some close quarter stuff occasionally if really needed .

Now heres the story ...
i carried a couple of rounds in my swanny pocket and loaded the gun if needed . On this occasion the pig just got a poke in the throat and gave up pretty quickly . So we thought , might as well singe it right there and get rid of all the lice before it went on someones back .

While waiting for the punga leaves and manuka brush to catch into a reasonable fire , we took a rest on a fallen punga log . Chewed the fat for a while , and trevor poked a bit savlon into Toss,s couple of rips .

Then an almighty explosion happened.!! The dogs scattered , Trevor fell backwards off the log, and stumbled into a forest of Bush lawyer , the fire was blown out towards me, missed the pig, singed me, causing me to be tempoarily blinded such that i met the lawyers, best mate in the bush, a 9 ft Ongaonga.
Only ash , and dusty grey smoke remained , where there was once a decent fire.
So , this is what had happened. A single round had fallen into the fire from my swanny pocket , and expoded . The case came out of the fire , and was found stuck in the punga log , about an inch below where trevs nut sack had been . The .303 projectile was never found ... the pig never got singed , and i dont put rounds in my swanny pocket any more and dont believe anyone that says , piss eases the stinging of Ongaonga .

They do go someways and anywhere, I was helping a WWI vet called Charlie Sharland clear out his house when I was about 8 or 10 and the balance of a 75 round tub went on the rubbish fire we had going outside. We took cover under the wee house which luckily as was the practise of those days rested on logs laid on the ground rather than piles which wouldnt have given much cover!

Incidentally Charlie was a renowned pig hunter in the Rai/Pelorus valleys area.

i remember those tubs . Never met Charlie though .

I recommend pissing on onga onga bites. But only for the entertainment factor for the rest of the party.
Don't do it myself. Have far better remedies.

Equally spectacular is dropping a cigarette lighter into an open fire.
I can really see why they dont like you carrying them on airplanes.

That would have been the old cordite .303 ammo - the stuff with the ball powder in it was a whole lot more refined and better socialised. The cordite strands were delayed by the fact of being in the brass case, with the heat coming in from all around outside the case the cordite lights over it's whole length at once vs with a flame from a primer at one end of the case only.

Went to use my unbranded jetboil not realisising that a Bic lighter was jammed in the bottom before fitting to the gas.

Flames everywhere burnt all the cover off the pot and stunk the hut out.

It was until I realised what had caused said fire.

I was in the Glaisnock hut once and a drunk fisherman arrived and loaded the stove up with logs, poured kero all over it, and then stood back and threw a light into it. The flames blew out sideways and caught the open bottle of kerosene he was holding on fire. He was drunk, staggering around waving his on fire hand and open bottle of kerosene all over the place like a flaming torch.

He was between me and the door and I thought, this idiot is really going to cause my death.

When I was young and stupid (no longer young) I flatted in a place with an open fire.
We were always pranking each other, when I think back at some of the stuff we did to each other, had we recorded it, as is commonplace today, we could have had quite a lucrative YouTube channel. - One of my go to favourites, was discreetly flicking a primer into the fire, when everyone was relaxed watching TV.

I’m sitting here sniggering away to myself, thinking back to the reactions. Generally screams, clutching at ones chest, followed by abuse and the odd punch.

I wouldn’t recommend it; funny as it was.
I think perhaps I had luck on my side. It made a hell of a bang, but it never seemed to blow any embers or anything outside the fire. Perhaps the odd one which was quickly put back in.

I can’t recall how many times I did it, not dozens, but more than once or twice.
Thinking about it now, the primer case and the little bit of steel which holds the charge in, must go somewhere, and perhaps I was just bloody lucky they never found there way out into the lounge and someone, rather than embedding themselves in the wood burning in the fire….

I sit here now at 56 and think, imagine if the primer casing hit someone in the eye.
At 22 my only consideration was how funny this was going to be.

When we were teenagers we took a mate out camping who had never done anything like that before.
Unbeknownst to us he had thrown a tin of baked beans in the fire to warm it up, it went pop and sprayed half of us with hot baked beans

Now to pore water on your stories, kerosene and diesel do not vaporise, ae not combustible. All the bullets I've seen explode in fireplaces( fair few over the yrs) all had split cases. But in saying that Barry Crump certainly embellished his stories to a better tale. Carry on with the paraphrasing.

And to pour water onto your "story", kerosene and diesel fuels most certainly do vaporise and combust.
How do you think most "jet" aircraft maintain propulsion? It's by combustion of vaporised (usually) Jet A1 fuel, which is a very specific grade of kerosene.
And diesel? The fuel is vaporised as it is injected at very high pressure into the combustion chamber.
Liquids do not burn - they must first be vaporised (converted into gaseous form) and combined with air (Oxygen) and ignited.
