To be fair if its currently a trial in two stations then it would make sense for Carhill to make his comments about Police and MH, if only to put pressure on it (or another solution) to be adopted nationally. As an aside I know that for the last few years Welly have been trialling a MH co-response team which has a DAO, cop and ambo officer in one vehicle which has been seen as very positive by frontline staff across all agencies.

If it didnt progress any further then thats down to NZ police as IIRC its been over two decades since the trial commenced after a MOU(memorandum of understanding) was raised between Police and MOH in this regard..


Most regions also have interface with corrections via community forensic teams holding clinic in prisons,and court liason nurses stationed in all courthouses for judges counsel etc to consult if required.

OK, here’s an update on the register
If an organisation, DOC, Akld Council, Mountain Safety, etc, own firearms, they can’t ( at present ) be registered to that organisation
They have to be registered to an individual, within that organisation
Now if the police audit that individual, and the firearms are stored somewhere else, on a Regional Park for example, no one knows the ramifications of that. Are they responsible if they’re stolen ?
Do they need to have firearms storage capable of holding those firearms, if needed ?
There’s a nationwide meeting, next week, to decide what to do.

On a similar note, I learned recently that after June, qualifying shoots for pistol club members are now only considered if they are advised completions at your home club. So you will not be able to count a practice session at your club and you can’t count any attendance at another club or Regional/National competitions toward your twelve per year. Absurd much? Who makes this shit up?

Its becoming an international theme. Same rules here too pretty much.

Many pistol shooters would attend practice on a Wednsday but seldom compete due to family commitments. The new rules mean that only compeditors qualify, reducing the number of shooters.

With what’s been happening in Ukraine for last 12+ months I would have thought all Scandivian countries and govts would be positively endorsing shooting clubs and responsible gun ownership

I don't think that is strictly correct. I've copied below an extract from Pistol NZ memo to clubs. "Scheduled shooting activities" count. It does seem odd that they don't count away competitions. Your secretary/club will have to submit a calendar for the coming year make sure it is as full as possible.

1. Member activities – from 01 July 2023
Please note that activities require that a person ‘participates in scheduled shooting activities organised by the pistol
shooting club of which the person is a member’. Actively participating in a club day or a new members training session
and the act of ROing these (referred to within the regulations as the ‘duty officer’) for a match count. ROing counts as
it is a health and safety matter that there must be an RO (Duty Officer) when any shooting takes place. However
working bees, committee meetings and general maintenance do not count towards an attendance.
The club activities that count for the attendance requirement are ones which have been notified to Te Tari Pūreke
Clubs and ranges (TTP CR) within the clubs annual report – either in the year previous or the year coming. A club is able
to add further club activities’ to the club calendar within the year, however these must be included in the next annual
report for the ‘previous year’ section.

The clubs then need to make it a round Robyn events practice season followed by contest. Same time as attendance.
There’s more than one way to skin the cat. For more serious contests come to the Saturday event.
Can’t see why this would not work. Also would certainly increase the club’s membership which is a good thing.
