Range Safety and steel targets......

The mind boggles. And he passes it off as a"A great day at the range":o:o:o

Thats just silly. In some countries your not allowed to engauge steel targets with any centerfire calibres closer than 200 yards.

I've seen a ricochet head back down a range at about 100m - steel targets can be dangerous if not set up correctly even at long ranges. That case was freestanding "falling plate" type targets, a sort of diamond shape fatter at about 1/3rd down and standing on a welded foot so that they fall over when impacted. In that case, two shooters had shot the same target and the second bullet arrived as the plate was already falling backwards. The thinking was the second bullet was the ricochet, just enough behind the first to hit the plate dead square. Not ideal.

Best way is suspend the target about 1/3rd the way down on the back of the plate so that the top angles towards the firing point and the bottom away. That means that the bullet should be deflected down into the ground under the plate upon impact, and not back from where it came...

That setup just looks bad though, and having tannerite loafing like that speaks for itself. Summed it up with 'Murica'.

Ha! And I spy below it a box of "Tannerite gender reveal blue". FFS Where else but 'Musica would you find that stuff on the shelf...

Ohh, I remember. Rural NZ in the 60's and 70's. Ask for gelignite at your local Dalgety's stock and station agent and the salesman would reach under the counter and bring out the box asking "how many sticks do you need?"

I shoot a lot of steel targets at short range at the pistol club and on my own range at home but the difference is that the face of targets are angled downwards and the firearms and calibres being used are considerably slower paced than an AR15. Even so there is still the occasional fragmentation splash back hence the compulsory wearing of eye protection. It is just dumb shooting steel with fast paced centre fire rifles at short range.

And blasting powder on top of the shelf above the coal range in a large AG persering jar , every second farm house had one .

Generally rifle targets should hang at 15 degrees off vertical to minimize risk.

Yep the rack above the coal range was a great place for dad to keep his 22 and shot gun ammo dry all yr round in the 50s 60s.

In the early nineties I would send my wife in to Wrighties in Hamilton to buy "jelly" for me. Funny part was she was working in the office at a local "facility" which is now called Corrections.
