Mine expires next week. my renewal application went in early Jan. My firearms, parts and ammo all all went on a holiday to a mates place yesterday. (his FAL is valid for another 3 years - I sighted it when handing them over.) My safe is more secure than his cabinet, but in the spirit of making NZ safer, I comply with the law to the letter.

whose insurance covers them when you dont have them............... perhaps the NZ Police should cover the premium since they are making the rules

Mate in CHCH took 8 months to get his license renewed. He received a letter about 6-8 weeks ago saying it had been approved. He is still waiting for license to arrive.

Yes, their police culture is, firearms owners are a problem to be managed, the less the better.

    Hey Fellas,
I'm going through the renewal process at the moment. My licence expires in Feb 2023 but I see that NZDA are saying that relicensing can take up to 12 months so I got my paperwork done about a month ago.

A few learnings that might be of interest:
    - The new form is 35 pages long - considerably more comprehensive than the last time I renewed so best to make plenty of time to complete carefully because any errors just further delay the process.
    - I learnt just a few days ago that one of my referees was determined unsuitable because they are a currently service member of the Police and this is considered a conflict of interest. I looked carefully at the form and didn't see reference to members of Police being unsuitable - it would have saved everyone time and hassle if they had been clear about this on the form.
    - I note that new FAL holders and anyone renewing an expired licence only has a licence duration of 5 years now, rather than the current 10 years. With all the drama and paperwork it would be pretty frustrating having to do this every 5 years.

    Cheers,

@CandiedGold the but about a cop is interesting.
Surely knowing a copper and having one for a reference would be a good thing. Theoretically they should be the best referee of them all. Quasi vetted already

@CandiedGold, initial licence is for 5 years and renewal thereafter is for 10 years.

Have you told plod where they have gone? I’ve got a few here of a person who’s dad died and they don’t have a licence, those firearms are noted, by the police, as held by me. About 5 years I’ve had them

I reapplied for mine last year in April.

Mine had expired in 2017 whilst I was living overseas, I paid the extra fee supplied all the details, references and wife and safe got vetted by arms officer and had new license issued after about 2.5 to 3 months from applying, in Rural NZ so probably a bit quicker than if I had been city based or I was just lucky.

My new FAL is valid for 5 years, my old one was 10.

    Cheers FBD

There is no requirement to tell the police who has the firearms, as long as the person who holds them has a current licence. In fact, if I gave them away, I just need to sight the recipients licence - not keep a record of who I gave them to. As far as I am aware, that is all that the law requires.

That's all the law currently requires.
It will change when they bring in the register.

My biggest issue is if your new license has not been issued by the time your "old" one expires the police consider you unlicensed and this means you have to move your "shit" to someone else who is licensed.

Some of us have a fair bit of $$ tied up and to be expected to essentially give it to a "mate" on trust is a bit much. Who is responsible if it gets damaged or nicked??

I say this when the NZ police seem totally unable to meet any kind of realistic time table with regards to renewals, if they take 8-12 months to issue then there should be the same tacked onto the other end as the other view, if its back dated, would be you are were never unlicensed and therefore should have never had to relocate your "shit" in the first place.
