Then in front of my wife asking "how many do you own" I gave him a wrong answer, but he'll never know, rude of him to ask!!

Seems a very stupid thing to ask. Golfers have more than one set of clubs but they only use them one at a time so why do they need so many. I've never been asked about numbers or types but always have good inspectors
