    5 months isn't all that long in renewal terms.
    The lead in time is a moot point.

    As long as the renewal application is lodged prior to expiry of the current licence, then the privileges can continue to be exercised until the issue of the new licence.

    Did it this way 02 July, expiry date 03 July, new licence issued 01 August.
    * Do make sure you’re ducks are all in a row though cause you don’t want to be chasing a passport photo of proof of address etc @16:30 the day before you expire !

    This is correct - and the registering of your firearms doesn't need to happen ahead of renewal, but it is an "activating circumstance" so you will have 30 days from submitting your application to register.
