Can be done first if you want, but when I renewed recently I lodged the application, they acknowledged receipt and stated I had to register arms, etc before the renewal process would continue.
FAL renewal is an activating circumstance. Best to get it done so it doesn't become a roadblock. 5 months isn't all that long in renewal terms.
Just gone through the process myself,received my renewed license 5 months after applying. Apply first, you'll receive an email stating its an activating event and go and do the register after.

I renewed mine about a year ago, registered first then applied, figured it would look a bit better having already registered. Had it all done in about 2 months from memory

As long as the renewal application is lodged prior to expiry of the current licence, then the privileges can continue to be exercised until the issue of the new licence.
Did it this way 02 July, expiry date 03 July, new licence issued 01 August.
* Do make sure you’re ducks are all in a row though cause you don’t want to be chasing a passport photo of proof of address etc @16:30 the day before you expire !

This is correct - and the registering of your firearms doesn't need to happen ahead of renewal, but it is an "activating circumstance" so you will have 30 days from submitting your application to register.Quote:
