Hi guys,
I am currently renting a place (stay in Wellington) and am looking at buying a rifle.
What would be best? Can I buy a rifle rack and that would be sufficient or should I go for a safe? It'sjust really tough to move a safe if I change where I live? Don't want to let the police come and do inspection and then they're not happy with a rack only?
Hopefully someone is in my position and has some good advice.

Maybe have a chat with the police, they are the ones you really have to please at the end of the day. I prefer a safe as it speaks for its self, but a mate of mine is in the boat as you and has a rack in a walldrobe.

Get a safe. Racks might be legal at the moment, but I don't see it being the case for much longer. And, when you get a safe, get a decent one like what used to be known as B, C, E cat. I would suspect that will also become minimum standard. I'm soon to buy a house, sure, but have flatted up till now and just moved 4 safes, one of which weighs over half a ton. My E cat rated one is much lighter though, and is manageable with two adults. It's all part of owning a firearm, and the rules are about to become stricter, you watch. You might not get burnt with a law change, but with the speed and aggressiveness of law changes recently, don't be surprised. Buy once, cry once etc.
Also run it past your landlord as some may not allow firearms, I have been there

Get a rack and throw it up into the man hole in the ceiling. Heavy duty and decent length screws to mount it into a solid beam that you can reach.

Although that may not be legit storage now days it worked well for me when renting in the past.
The practical steps Preacher is proposing are reasonable but my personal take is that regardless of what you're fixing how, I'd run it past your landlord first, especially if they're slightly user-friendly/ your relationship is ok with them. Getting caught trying to do the sneaky and having permanently damaged the place is a good way to get kicked out pronto and lose a good chunk of your bond, especially if they're feeling malicious/ hard done by. It also opens you up to an angry (ex) landlord talking to the cops about how you might not be "fit and proper", as some people have previously mentioned on here. It starts getting pricey if they start charging you to repair load bearing members or even damage to linings.Quote:

Two or three small screw holes on the topside of a ceiling beam is hardly permanently damaged.
Personally I would rather a landlord did NOT know I had firearms. But to each their own.
This is what I did in one of my flats, the screw damage is minimal and also consider covering it with something, I used to keep a towel draped over rack/guns and it wasn't all that obvious.Quote:

Explain to him that because you have a firearms license, it is a legal requirement that you must have secure storage, even if you do not own any at the time. No need to mention the total number of airsofts that will be in it.Quote:

As a landlord for the past 12 years, I can tell you that a few holes in plasterboard where a gun safe was does not represent an issue.
Having firearms on property could be an issue for some landlords...I would not tell the landlord myself.
A stable tenancy is worth a lot more in terms of hassle and vacant weeks than having a "there is no shortage of tenants attitude"
Main thing is to get friendly with a plasterer. Make sure it doesn't look like you had any holes there when you leave
My last landlord (a lady) freaked out when I told her I was a firearms owner, and wanted to put a safe in. Her husband calmed her down, and it became okay. After we'd been there over a year, she asked me one day if I'd mind shooting the possum that kept waking her up, so I did that and it was then very okay. She and her husband both said they were glad I'd been straight up about it, and so was I when the contractors came and did the underfloor insulation - they never saw a thing that looked like a firearm of any kind. My current landlord wanted to have a look at mine, then wanted to show me his. But he's a farmer and has a different view of the world than the townies. I can even set up a target over the other side of the gully and shoot from the deck. Just not when there's stock around. Naturally. :thumbsup: Some landlords are easy to get on with, as long as you respect the fact that while it's it's your home, it's their house.
I'm sorry but this is a crock of shit. Being a landlord does not and should not give you dictatorial powers over your tenants. Provided they do undertake any illegal activities or damage the property its none of your business what they do. This is written in to law.Quote:

Most people aren't renting by choice, and it is an entirely different situation to a farmer gifting you access for a shot.
Iv been a landlord to & I wouldn't expected to be ask to put in a gun save its no different to then puting up photos / mounting there flat screen tvs to every bedroom & lounge wall
Iv never come across a tenancy agreement stating no guns , sounds like BS to me & if got to the stage landlords where being dicks id mention it after moving in or not at all .
the other problem that some will have with firearms on their property is the health and safety bullshit as once your in their property they've just taken over from your mum and now its their problem if anything happens for someone who isn't familiar or comfortable with firearms its easier to not go there BUT as ive said before I don't have problem with my tenant having firearms on my property and the simple fact is some will have a problem and they are allowed to

Steel gun racks of stout construction with a good locking mechanism secured to a solid structure are perfectly legal. In fact, some are a far better for firearms security than some metal gun safes/cabinets. There is a section in the police "NZ Firearms Licence Vetting Guide" for gun racks.Quote:

Personally I feel my firearms are much less secure after having to put in a "safe" rather than well hidden racks. Unfortunately my hidey hole doesn't allow space for the current stable.
The law as it stands still allows racks. Don't be a cock and leave your bolt and magazine fitted when in rack on living room wall though.
I had my FAL inspection this week, I have a well hidden/secured gun rack and the AO was fine with it. No issues at all.
Afterwards I specifically asked him about the preference between a well hidden/secured rack and a safe and he was totally fine with the rack.
