    Rifle storage in your car?

could be a silly question and I'm completely reading it wrong buuuutt, are we required to transport firearms in hard case when in the car? I think what I read is they must be out of sight and made inoperable ie if you can remove the bolt and store bolt some where else a standard soft zippered case would be fine or if semi auto or lever action, a trigger lock+ standard soft zippered case would be fine?

As far as I know, need to have a lockable box of sorts for bolt and ammo, rifle out of sight. I have a lock that goes through the chamber so you can't put the bolt in

There's what the law actually states, then there's what the police wishfully tries to enforce on top of that. They often aren't the same thing.
My understanding is the firearm needs to be out of sight, inoperable, and ammunition stored separately in a locked container e.g. glovebox.
I don't think the firearm itself necessarily needs to be in a bag or case at all as long as it's out of sight.

No the ammo doesn’t “have” to be locked. Only locked in a glovebox where practicable.

For thinking outside the box maybe think of making a box that sits on car or double cabs back seat.
Go to "Outdoor transport", BT50 rifle stowage.

For the avoidance of doubt, and complications, I use a metal tool box to padlock ammo and bolt in. BA rifles, bolt removed and out of sight. LA rifles and pump action shorties I use a lock cable thru the action. Single
shot rifles and break action shotguns are either in a locked hardcase or have a trigger lock fitted. When on extended trips I run a heavy cable with end loops through my rear load tie downs and padlock the loops together. Then I can use rifle cable locks to individually lock my ammo box and long guns and locked Pistol cases to the heavy cable for my own peace of mind. Just to stop the smash and grabbers but ineffective against anyone with serious intent, time and kit.

I made a false floor for my ute deck. Rifles and shotguns slide in underneath, Wet muddy dog and what ever else on top.

Ammo and bolts in glove box.

I do above and also have a chain that runs around a seat mount so rifle is locked to the car. I use a long shanked padlock that goes through loading port and out the back of action preventing the bolt from being fitted

Thanks for clearing that up team. ive always pretty much don as everyone has. it was only through taking to a couple of people and they were adamant that you needed your rifle locked in a hard case if it was in the ute, whether it was bolt action, semi auto, lever action or anything.

I see bloody Muzza has become a film star

Most of the legislation is straight forward, but I hate it when they feel it necessary to quote " Police recommend......". That just shows the legislation has perceived gaps. Something is either mandatory or its not. End of story.
