Always open and the chamber before handing a firearm to someone and always inspect the chamber when receiving it.
This a basic safety precaution I don't often see.

Totally agree with the above statement.

Same guys, always open the action and inspect when receiving / handing a rifle over!!!!
I'm slack with this. I know if Im loaded or not and let who ever needs to know know.
You should be shot! Toby slack is not a word to use here!!:wtfsmilie: surely if someone hands you a firearm, the muzzles safe and if the actions closed you open it. We always had a system of some sort when out shooting, including spot checks!
The most important rule imo is keeping that muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
what's the best thing regarding this with a semi rifle or pump shottie?
With a semi, I drop to one knee, magazine out, tilt-cock, tilt-look. Hold working parts to the rear / apply hold-open (if applicable). Allow receiving shooter to confirm chamber empty. Hand over. Pump action much the same, unload until empty, action open and visually inspect chamber, check elevator, check magazine (tube). Hand over with action open.
Why drop to the knee?
Seems like alot of work to just empty a gun and show someone tbh
Do it your own way then. :)
First problem is I cant drop on my knee... Even if I could I wouldn't tbh. I'd lmao if I saw someone drop to their knee in front of me to show me the guns empty.
Never had a issue with the RO at the NZDA shoot I attended. Just ripped out the mag locked the action back and doneskis.
Nobody said that you had to take a knee - admittedly it might not always be practical but if the surroundings permit, it's easier to flick out any live rounds in the chamber and retrieve them in the same movement.
Suck it up Toby, Im sure we can all remember moments when a chill went up our spines, I have had a couple and you develop a another sense around firearms and especially the person with it in their hands ( and even more of a sense if you dont know them!). Never feel guilty about saying something there and then if your not happy. Better to be sure than sorry
every store I went in to have a play with a gun they practice this... which is nice to see
And say CLEAR
So the rest of your sqaud or hunting/shooting companions know its clear and been inspected by the receiver.
Me too - if out bunny shooting etc on farms, its pretty common to be passing guns to your mates while opening/shutting gates or climbing over fences.
If its empty I generally (I'm too honest to say I've never forgotten) open the bolt to show them as I hand it over, if there is one up the spout I will tell them, I don't eject it but do lift the bolt and engage the safety. Should go without saying that its pointed in a safe direction as well.
I don't think its really necessary to always empty the chamber before handing it over if you're with people you know/trust and the state is communicated clearly.
We understand Toby just giving you some shit, make sure you take the bow out of the bow and remove the arrows be fore handing over. One knee would certainly look good:D
And I suppose you'd want it unloaded, small calibre I also suppose and a single shot without a pistol grip or muzzle brake?
Just like black powder, been in the bag a while?:ORLY: if I didn't have my wife with me on my trip to Auck I'd call in and give you some shit tomorrow!
Just as well you reminded me, I'll wear my patch
Were the fucken did you get that photo of me!
I was hunting with a mate once and we had stopped for a bit, so I decided to unchamber the round from my rifle (semi 22).
After our rest he wanted to take my gun for a blat, so went off by himself. When I caught up with him he was mighty pissed, as he tried to shoot something but the gun didn't fire.
I always would check to see the condition of a rifle I was just handed, and I guess he did from then on too.
I probably should have shown/told him it was empty, maybe I did. It was when I was much much younger, so can't remember all details.
I do that to myself more than enough. Always drop the mag, open the bolt, catch the round and pop it back in the top of the mag. Though after doing so will quite often close the bolt on a checked empty chamber to keep the dust out if the conditions are bad. This is just handing the rifle to myself when I work a gate. It has caused the odd bit of very good luck for a few rabbits.
If handing to someone else it is empty and checked by both people, or occasionally it will be stated 'Bolt locked closed on an empty chamber, treat as loaded.'
Im always surprised by the number of pics I see of people with a dead animal, and the bolt on half cock.
Or a rifle leaning against a tree in the bush on half cock.
Not sure what that’s all about. I always wonder if the chamber is empty?
