th eonly full auto i fired that was controllable thru an entire mag was a ppsh-41 smg.
HK MP5 is also relatively controllable on full-auto, gotta love the roller-delayed blowback design.

When the SLRs were coming up for tender/disposal a minute came around to all us soldiers that if we wanted one and had a current nzfirearms licence we could put our names down which a few of us did. @turtle that's pretty much what a couple of Veitnam vets told me.
Slr didn't care if the opposition was hiding behind a tree. M16 not so much.
Same issues with the forces in the middle east over the last 20 years. Taking on combatants with multi layered clothing and gear, sometimes a long way away with a short barrelled M4 not giving the ammo its full performance as well as needing something with more punch to take out suicide bombers quickly has given impetus for larger calibres like the 6.5s, 6.8s and even bigger.

Slightly off-topic but SLR related. A mate told me of his first ever contact in the jungle. Everyone hit the deck and looked for targets, and seeing one cross the track in front he fired a shot and dropped him. Then another ran across so he fired again and dropped him as well. Not bad, he thought - two for two! Then he saw 3 empty magazines on the ground. A lucky combination of combat 'tunnel vision' and good training!

a .243 converted SLR or was it an SLR converted to .243

Yes, I did a few of them in both .243 and .308. The Shilen barrel blanks (I was importing them at the time) were turned to a slightly heavier profile which gave better accuracy, a steel Weaver type base on the dust cover which was tightly refitted, the metal work polished and blued, and the stocks refinished with a recoil pad fitted. I did a few batches of them and have a photo somewhere of a finished batch in a workshop rack. I also did a couple of presentation ones with some engraving and gold-plated trigger, safety, and body latch. The magazines were black powder-coated.Quote:

Good to hear! I am enjoying retirement but still keeping busy and active. I still do quite a lot of shooting (pistol, rifle, and shotgun) and just agreed to do a bit of part-time shooting for one of the local cherry orchards. Shooting doubles on starlings with a pump action is good practice!

This one is the custom L1A1 we built to donate as the prize for the winner of the 1989 Practical Rifle champs. Myself and Jon Jones with the rifle. It was won by the late Paul Mander of the Christchurch Pistol Club.

These are 5 sporting model SLR's we built in .243. They have 10 shot mags and are fitted with 4x Nikko Stirling Gold Crown 'scopes. There are also 3 .45 Marlin fully suppressed Camp Carbines, 1 completed and 2 yet to be anodized.

Wow gundoc and thanks for those photo's. It could very well be that one of those SLR's was issued to a young fresh faced Private Rushy back in 1971. I loved the aperture sight on the SLR and could knock the nuts off a gnat at a hundred with it. Mind you I would have to admit that my eyesight was a bunch better back then.

@gundoc a workmate of mine 20+ years ago who from memory had some sort of family connection through marriage to you, had I believe a fat (maybe target?) barrel version of an slr you did.
Hi Rushy. A bit of a long shot but quite possible! My 1,000 was from the sale batch of 2,500, from a total of just over 15,000 SLR's in NZ service. We were issued No4's when I went through Burnham in the early 1960's but we trained with SLR's. Only the Regular Force were issued with them at that stage. As for eyesight, we won't go there!Quote:
