About 10 years ago I wanted a 28 gauge double gun. I went to a renowned small retailer in my town. Stated what I wanted, please order it ( they are a seller of the brand I wanted). I don't mind waiting and how much deposit do you want?
Just to prove I was serious.
Do you know what they said?
"Oh no you don't want that, here buy this 12 gauge. It's all we use"
You know what, I have never bought another thing in that shop.

The fact you can buy projectiles, primers, brass, powder and all reloading equipment without a license seems rather a strange loophole. Only recently realised this was a thing. Always assumed at least powder needed a license.

its not just gun/sports shops. and the main reason they are failing is crap service. so many staff just cant give a fetid dingoes kidney. try buying electrical/electronic parts. staff wont even go to the shelf to see if they are in stock they just rely on the pc in front of them say "no" and wander off.
its now far easier just to order online and usually from overseas.

As far as screwing people over, I've seen far more private sellers "screwing over" other shooters than any retailers.
In fact I can only recall one recent retailer that I perceived to be gouging and that's only my perception there may well be a genuine and legitimate reason for the $100 per tray magnum primers. So guess what ? I ain't gonna get all bent outta shape about that either, I just won't buy them.

This isn't impinging on anyone's rights because as a retailer in NZ, Woolworths is allowed to refuse service for any reason as long as it's not discriminatory against race, gender, religion, disability and a few other factors. Those under 16s that get really pissed off at this can just go to another retailer that will sell to them.
Where I buy my powder asks to see my license. So GC and Gunworks aren't on their own.
