NZHIS data indicated that as a result of horse-related injuries 5613 people were hospitalised between 1993 and 2001 and there were 16 fatalities between 1993 and 1999. Horse-related injuries were most prevalent in young females aged 10 to 19 years. Among Maori (the indigenous people of New Zealand), men predominated in horse-related injury numbers. Overall, half of equestrian injuries occurred in those under the age of 19 years.
