At it's heart, that is the only way societies can successfully function. More rules inevitably leads first to tyranny, then chaos as the population rebels, then bad times. Reading through history shows that our situation is not unique, and despite an increase in available knowledge (or maybe simply information?), there hasn't been a corresponding increase in understanding.
