Two FAL holders on one property?

So I have a curly one and quite possibly difficult to get an answer for.

I have read through the FSA registration and FAL application requirements but can't find an answer to this.

In our house we have one FAL holder who has firearms stored on the premises. We want to apply for a FAL for the other adult in the house but we are very concerned about triggering the firearms registration requirement.

It's not that we aren't law-abiding citizens...it's just we simply do not trust the authorities to keep our data safe from the criminal element so we wish to avoid triggering the registration process as long as possible.

What to do?... as part of a FAL application your firearms storage must be inspected. The existing FAL holder has their own secure storage and the new FAL applicant can have their own storage safe which of course would be empty of firearms on inspection. But will the arms officer consider all firearms stored on the property regardless of ownership and independent storage as a blanket registration requirement?

Anyone been down this road yet?

why not email them or call the 0800number and ask .you can state its a hypothetical enquiry at this point or words to that eefect .depending on whats said willdicte your actions .the storage of data etc -your concerns are understandable ,but i wouldnt get too paranoid at this point.

Just be done with it & registered them as some point in near future when you buy ammo it going trigger it anyway & iv been told that if national get in they going leave it be till 26 & review it then & most people will have trigger the reg by then with buying ammo

@hunt08 While I agree we will all have to register them at some point, I am waiting at least until after the election. And secondly, buying ammo is not a triggering event...I will register anything that I may own at the time when I am required, but as this mob have not made being a FAL holder, I see no reason to make it easy for them in return. Besides, we all know full well this register will be a total cluster ........um.....Duck?.....and I dount it will last the 5 years until everyone has to have firearms registered.... have no desire to be in amongst it if I dont have to be....

Lets face it, it has already had a major leak and its age could still be measured in Days.....

My view on this is that the new person getting the FAL (when obtained) will have an activating event and need to register but with that said it is entirely OK to make a declaration that they are not in possession of any firearms if indeed it is the other long stand FAL holder that has always possessed the firearms. My opinion being that it would be up to the long standing FAL holder to register when that person experiences an activating event (noting that only one person can be in possession of a firearm under the new legislation and the responsibility falls to that person to register). And for the record I am firmly in the camp of tell them nothing until you absolutely need to or the end of the five year period happens to be tomorrow.

Something i wondered was if your a fal and your a referee does that trigger something on you?

Contact the FSA and ask the question, just about any answer you get on here is hearsay. But make sure you make it clear no firearm has been bought/sold or lent out for a period exceeding 30 days.

From the way I understand it any interaction with police triggers rego, so I believe that would be considered police interaction for the current fal holder.....

If a new applicant for a firearm license has their own security and no access to any other firearm security in the residence, then no that is not an activating event for the current firearm license holder. A good example would be flat mates in the same house.
Our club has had it confirmed that being a referee for a firearm applicant is not an activating event.

Thanks for the advice all, I will phone the FSA and ask some hypotheticals but not confident I will get correct answers as from what I have have read of the law its open to interpretation with respect to our situation. Those suggesting we just go ahead a register firearms now are missing the point about data security. We are very security minded and have seen over the years repeated public leaks of personal data not just by the FSA and police but also other government departments. We simply do not trust govt. departments to keep our information secure so will hold off going through the registration process as long as possible.

The feedback from Tasbay sounds like solid advice from someone who has gone down this road..the the flatmate analogy is a very good example I think.

Email them so you get a reply in writing. Then it isn't a case of "he said, she said".

I agree with this. The existing FAL has not done or is not doing anything to trigger registration.

Will they require the new licence holder to have their own safe/security?
Currently both my wife and myself are licence holders and we only have one safe shared between us.

Hey mate. I have just been through this as we're living with our inlaws at the mo. Didn't trigger anything, Father in law has 5 years to register his stuff still, both of us are seperate to one another besides sharing a safe, feel free to PM if you need to know more etc

I’m so happy to have a great selection of firearms and at my age I forget what I own. It’s like buying a new firearm when I find one I’ve forgotten about. Is this a triggering event, should I make a phone call?

So if I get a pull for exceeding the speed limit or get stopped at a breath check or give a witness statement or report a crime I’ve got pass my personal details to the mob?

I saw this from our local police station posted on Facebook a few weeks ago....

An important message for anyone with a Firearms license: Each week we are taking gun licenses and guns from local people and banning them from having a gun license. This is a directive to us from the Firearms folk in Wellington, This is because they have broken the law in some form, even drink driving or driving without a license can cause you to lose your gun license now. And of course, any bad behaviour like threatening people will cause you to lose it as well. To be a firearms license holder, you must be a lawful and responsible person. My message is: Don’t break the law. if you end up in court it will probably be the end of your gun license as well.

My belief is that the FSA will not have an answer to this and have not written a clear answer into their policy, nor will it be in the arms act. Someone will simply make a decision on the day. Likely to err on the side of forcing registration on you and will find some way of justifying their decision even if they can’t point to where it says in black & white, because they’ve made an interpretation that they prefer. It’s how a lot of legislation works, and rarely in favour of the little guy.

id suggest you e mail mark mitchell (nats Police) or nicle mckee (act ) and place this in their hands.

Im bloody sure the judiciary have told NZ police before they are not judge jury and executioner like it appears to be here.

Some questions need asking of Costers mob and this new entity .anyhow everytime this entities PR dept have posted on facebook FALholders just remind em to learn to walk before they try to run .after all theyre just another socialist civil service entity
