Unlicenced man sells illegal firearm to gang member

Whanganui man admits selling illegal firearm to gang member - NZ Herald

Something to make legit firearms owners spew. 
What I want to know is where did he get it from in the first place?
What sort of deterrent sentience do you think this valuable member of society will get? Home D? Some waste of time community service? Or will judge Cooper will make an example of him?

Bit that makes me. Spew is that he was allowed to leave the firearms store with a firearm having not shown his licence. All nz stores have this policy (asked around after someone on here got caught out), said store needs a kick up the arse

The store is under no obligation to see his license, he took the rifle in therefore the assumption would be he was the legal owner. Had he left it there for repair etc he would have been asked to produce his license when picking it up.

Personally I don't think you should be able to buy any gun parts with a gun licence
hope judge makes an example of him

Where's the problem now? Illegal firearm, selling it to a gang member, growing an illegal drug? It will be with the judge if the sentence doesn't fit the crime. The police by now should have made attempts to recover it and the purchaser also charged?

It sounds like the rifle was sawnoff or something similar for it to be an illegal firearm (and to fit under a car seat), and that probably the gun shop reported it to the police. The article says they searched his place because he had no license, so someone had to have told the police he had a firearm. 16 days from shop visit to search is a long time though.

Yep agree, I was left wondering that too. He was clearly sketchy enough for the shop to report to the police, but after two and a half weeks it's no wonder he'd had time to get rid of it. It will be interesting to see how the judiciary treat it and what proportion of the max sentence he gets. It can hardly be considered a minor end of the spectrum offence for several reasons, so lets see if it gets less than 1/10th of max (my bet is that it won't even end up being that)

funny that -was just reading sideshows post on the "ultravires "thread and police communique re MSSA.the very last point made seems to fit this wee blooper(sarcastic bastard arent I) ideally-police and safety ,legal etc etc firearms use. now tis is not gents a case of seeing if indeed proof of pudding is in the eating.
over to you m'lud, and a well executed longshot to the boundary would look rather splendid-the man is a fool and needs to be made aware of us the law abiding ones!

Yup. The police should be pushing their efforts at the courts, not us. It fucking amazes me how twisted this all is

Once again I think there should be a "Possession with Criminal Intent" rule with some sort of mandatory sentence. In this case his only reason to have the weapon was probably to defend his drugs or on sell to another criminal. Unlawful possession is more for someone who got their Grandfathers gun and never got a license or hunters with no license (yes they are out there) etc.
