    Varmint annoyance

Hey guys, I live on a small holding type farm and have no direct neighbours but they’d be in earshot of gunfire for sure.

Realistically does anyone know how quiet a .22 suppressed with subsonic ammo is? A 22LR mossberg 802 (to be precise).

I can watch most nights possums sneaking into my chickens area I don’t really want to fully seal their enclosure with a roof an all, I like them free roaming but I’d be more than happy to pop off the little furry bas****s that are trying to take their eggs.

I don’t want to annoy my neighbours I could warn them and I’m sure they’d be fine but I bet it’s still gunna wake up their little kid which I’d feel bad for.

    Any thoughts?

Cci have a good quiet round that hardly make a noise in either my suppressed pistol or rifle. Very quiet.

Doesn't cycle either of them being semis but will work fine in a bolt gun and kill possums up close no worries.

As long as you have a suppressor on your 802, you should be fine.

Buy a pack of the CCI' Quiets and shoot a few during the day to test the noise level.

If you hit a possum solidly, I think you might find the WHOCK !! sound is almost as loud.

Suppressed .22 is in my humble opinion quieter than some air rifles I’ve heard

Yes tell your neighbours but hardly likely to wake the kid unless they awake already and see your light

Naturally you’ll be 100% certain of your firing zone. In daylight prior, check out all the shooting zones you’ll use and look at where the bullet will go when you miss.....

Yes of course , safety is always my number one priority and where I’m positioned I wouldn’t be shooting anywhere near the direction of the house. Really good info guys think I might invest it seems a pretty good gun package. Ccis seem a good choice.

I reserve the right by use
Of force to have eggs for breakfast haha

If you see them still in the tree before they get to the ground, just hold the torch beam in their eyes and walk quietly to the tree and easy head shot
    Ya can't park there mate.

Last week the Mrs and I were dispatching rabbits on a lifestyle block with the neighbours being within 100m at one point and a rabbit was taken about 50m from the main house. Was using CCI quiets and after we were done the owner said he heard nothing from inside their house nor did the neighbours either.

Possums is tough liddle buggerz. You might have to zap a few subs into the engine room or one good one into the central computer to stop them.

I've seen one that was run over by a Datsun several times and still got up and walked about 10m.

I've used 22lr subs with a 22wmr suppressor and the loudest noises from my end were the firing pin hitting and the thud of the projectile in the engine room. Multi pump air rifle is also a very quiet option if you don't want the expense of a PCP set up.

Normal subsonics run close to the speed of sound but should still be quiet enough that the loudest noise will be you cycling the bolt or the THUD of the bullet hitting. Super quiets and the CC quiets drop the speed even further to around the 740fps meaning they wont carry as much energy into the animal. Possums can be tough wee buggers so as mentioned follow up shots will be very possible. I found the CCI Subsonic (not the quiets) run a bit too close to the speed of sound for my liking and I get the occasional super sonic crack with them. Kilwell whisper work fine in my rifle, as do Winchester Subs.

I have a similar problem but with rabbits eating my new hedge at te moment, but there is not a safe firing zone I am happy with so I will be resorting to liquid shotgun (Chemical warfare) and traps so look out bunnies...

Quiet ? The F€«£*¿G things have a crack that would wake the dead. No 12 shot only good for 20 or so feet. I use a lot in the covered yard for starlings with pluga and ear muffs.

Neighbours got double glazing? If so no worries at all. Was using 22 subs at my old place and the neighbours in the apartment next door didn't hear a thing (20?m)
