Very sad for all involved.
Wonder how the police, press and the anti-gun lobby are going to spin this one ?

Over heard about this last night and wondered how it was going to be spun with the roar and duckshooting, plus the recommendations coming out...
Tragic, but expect it to be spun that he was a LFAO (if he was at all) who just happened to be a cop.

Tragic in the extreme.
Bloody hell, so many lives ruined.
Hope it wasn't a police firearm,
duh
Cops don't have to have licences for work. Just like soldiers don't.
Perhaps the answer is more regular firearms relicensing? Maybe once every three years with a note from your doctor saying you're not mental.
A lot can happen in ten years between getting a new licence. Could happen in three years too, but should help catch a few mentals with gun licences.
gawd a doctor sees you for 15/60 and can form an opinion youre not unstable.
what i dont like about you is youre phraseology -mental went out with lunatic ,asylum etc etc and other derogatory terms-I know im pissing into a norwest wing here and no doubt ill cop a mouthful. Im a psych nurse of 45yrs with depression and and FALso Im one you look down on.???
you need to pick up your game before you become a complete laughingstock.
My brother in law in is under the care of the mental health team at his local hospital for his mental health problems.
And when people notice him talking to himself, he sometimes says "Don't worry. I'm just a little bit mental."
So I really don't care if you consider it a derogatory term. It's a common expression and everyone knows what it means.
In the meantime, try this link. It may help you. Punctuation | English Grammar Guide | EF
I think the upside is, I reckon mental health is going to get a shit load more funding, not just because of this but it's becoming more acceptable to talk about the old 'black dog' than ever before. My biggest concern would be, are half the doctors even capable of treating the symptoms? IMO I think not, because they haven't been trained for it..........all I hear is, take 2 of these a day and come back and see me in a month if nothing has changed. I know of 2 people that never got to make it back!
I reckon in todays age calling people 'mental' is a bit like using the "N" (nigger) word!!! It's ok for THEM to reference it, as does your brother in law....I spose that is one upside you get when your mental. @kotuku what is the term that should be used? Is it "mental health issues" ?
More regular licensing will have no effect detecting mental health issues, actually as found in the UK it will have the opposite effect, where firearms holders will avoid visiting doctors, for mild depression, for fear of losing there license.
Reminds me of an old boy who walked into a gunshop near my old home town a few years ago. He was a well known regular customer.
He asked to view a 12g, and once handed the gun, reached into his pocket, loaded said gun, and took his own life right there and then.
No one saw that one coming, sadly :(
Turned out his wife and lifelong partner had recently passed away.
Days ago some LFAO topped himself at a range in Oz.

BITE LIKE A RABID DOG -JUST AS I PREDICTED.you dont care ,youve never cared and it sticks out like a rabid dogs bollocks.no wonder the moniker systolic is used.
dont point the finger at me matey brae just cause the truth hurts.
just because your brother may use the term doesnt mean you should take it as carte blanche.
more funding -...more funding.....jesus wept keep that thought in mind .no you are sadly mistaken and again you r generalisations about doctors in the filed dont do anything to help your case.
Rogerfuckingnomics is here to stay and health like every other portfolio is subjected to the creative staistical whims of beancounters and their political masters.
Toall you voters out there -next election ask the prick who approaches you cap in hand "vote for me sir"what do you know about the local health budget orlocal mental health .five bloody bob says helltrot out the socialist or tory dogma, and wouldnt have a clue locally.
THEY'D RATHER LEGALISE FUCKING CANNABIS CAUSE ITLL GARNER THE STONER BLUDGER VOTE-yep all lot of whom are already supported by your taxes or are forvever domiciled in my psychotic motels. the last decade i worked in the field of forensic psychiatry dealing with things on two legs that would have a PMT laden bull elephant reaching for valium. 80%of those humans have in their background a prolonged dalliance with piss &electric puha ,often iced with the sexy wee veneer of meth. a lot would literally stuff anything into any orifice to blast themselves into temporary oblivion.cost to treat -huger than donald trumps ego.
reality of more money for EFFECTIVE MENTAL HEALTH-as much show as racing a imbecilic draught horse in the melbourne fucking cup and beating sunset home! and heres the icing on my cake -in 37yrs of work in CHCH i stood in mute silenceas 16 caskets were borne past me -fellow mental health professionals who in that minute moment in time took themselves out of the human race-nurses that is not consumers (modern parlance) when you get your tits in a tangle over mental health services not living up to "yourexpectations" hows about you pause and reflect 'what if i was in their shoes".
Ihave at times when this shit arises actually taken people through the hospital-hmmmmits amazing to see how wideeyed some are when they realise these people are no bloody different to you me or the bloke down the road.
in summary ,there is NO SIMPLE ANSWER.If i drone on Imake no pardons about it -i speak the truthand if you dont like it ,im not asking you to,what im asking is a little respect-not toomuch to ask IMHO
screamo -say what you like but at least show the person you do respect and acknowledge them.modern parlance (PC)is consumers. a lot of people in my care dont think this is right ,but ll every one has a point of view. what galls me is often these people bear societies stigma of mental illness through no bloody fault of their own ,rather mother nature the perverse old bitch merely having her say.these poor buggers are ridiculed ,looked down on ,or patronised whilst career crims(who have often made the choice)are eyed up by acolytes and enablers and legal gougers as misunderstood heroes.
crims can exert controls over the situation generally -its a matter of choices of action(generally speaking) but mentally ill people are often sucked into a maelstrom of thought and emotion which noone is able to encase or control initially and to do so-if we can is often a prolonged and very complex process with no ironclad guarantees.
theres no release when youve"done your time" or home detention ..more like a life of struggle ,torment and being subject to societies covert sniggers .
I have to get medical certs to renew my heavy trade, trailer licenses and passenger endorsement. At my own expense.
A cert from a shrink could be at the applicant's expense too. There are plenty of private providers who could do it as a business, like lawyers who specialise in firearms law. I'm not suggesting using health board or public shrinks.
You seem quite worked up about this. Are you worried you might get flagged for something?
Theres no comparison... don't be lame
That's a poor comparison, they're licencing privileges normally associated with commercial activity.
Although regulated, firearms are predominantly a recreational pursuit.
I doubt that further levels of bureaucracy would make a tangible difference in the frequency or outcome in this type of incident. Personally I have no desire to have to pay a stranger to deem me mentally stable on renewal of my licence, two personal referees accomplishes the same thing quite effectively in my opinion.
You can't legislate risk entirely out of any given activity.
How many people have accidents due to underlying medical problems that went undetected during there medical assessments, probably to many to count, you obviously have very little knowledge of mental illnesses, how many sessions with a shrink do you suggest ? Have you tried it yourself ?
I know one who couldn't be detected... by the very organisation that he worked for... you know the ones actually responsible for determining fit and proper?
How many times have shrinks released people saying they are safe, not suicidal... these are regular news events.
The ability to predict future competance is almost non-existant. This isn't a medical physical examination or a skills test.
Mental Health Foundation Stats:
In the 2012/13 New Zealand Health Survey, one in six New Zealand adults (16%, or an estimated 582,000 adults) had been diagnosed with a common mental disorder at some time in their lives (including depression, bipolar disorder and/or anxiety disorder).
There is no way to predict a pre-disposition to mental illness in the general population.
Its no different to predicting who might break their wrist. You can't simply say the clumsy and accident prone are the most likely to.
