Probably an anti-guns person waiting to have other folks say that they leave their guns sitting out all day too.

I think if police did spot checks on random rural gun owners houses about 1 in 20 of them would lose their license at any time.

So I think that's where they get them from, they could import them or 3D print them if they had to but it's easier to just tell some lower down associate to go out burglarizing.

I don't get "inside" that many houses but I can think of at least 3 round here where I have seen shotties or a 22 "proped up behind a door". Not for any reason, just bloody careless or unknowing. Many many farms are the same with the killing shed 22/303 just left there. Makes me shudder, and if you mention it (like I did to a rellie) it gets you a very dirty look.

Its not just you, I once observed a farmer shoot a pest through the window with the shotgun that was "stored" behind the door.
My guess its more of an issue with older generations who have a more lax attitude to security and have refused to comply with newer regulations, i was told that back in the 1960s this was a common sight to see in many farmhouses.
Even in the 90's i remember a classmate that i visited and they just kept all their guns in their hallway cupboard, but I believe this was around the time the regulations were becoming more stringent and they told me they were going to be required to lock them away, which they did later install a gun rack right visible in the hallway where visitors could view when the front door was opened.

As far as illegal imports, yes this is a huge problem, I once met a guy who works at customs and told me they simply dont have the resources to scan and inspect every single container entering the country, they only inspect a fraction of them at random. That being said, they still find alot of stuff, but I hate to think what slips through.

I can beleive what he says as been a fencing contractor for 40 years and security used to be a bit slack in the days passed.
I would suggest this culture will have changed as well as going on holiday and leaving the house unlocked and keys in the vehicles!

FG (Fred) produced barbed wire and other product for the army during WW2, at the end of the war he got sent a large cheque so he started Hurricane Wire, later on he sold it but soon regretted it and tried to buy Hurricane back- they wouldn't sell to him. So FG thought stuff it and built Southwire and took Hurricane & Cyclone head on.

Southwire is now Southfence in Hornby, I spent 10yrs in electric fencing with Pel Industries which was right next door to Southwire. FG's son Peter Ullrich was ceo of Pel, after 10yrs there I transferred to Southwire/Southfence for 4yrs before becoming redundant, reason for that was Southfence had been bought out by Eurocorp so I was no longer distribution manager and relegated back to factory work so I said see ya later. FG's other son John Ullrich was ceo of a wire firm in Fiji and in Melbourne, both Peter & John hated each other and weren't communicating. John has 2 sons Mark & someone, both are twins. FG died years ago now, Pel got bought out by Tru Test in Auck whom bought out Cyclone, the Ullrich family never owned Cyclone, that move put Southfence into direct opposition with Cyclone therefore Southfence & Tru Test fell out. This slowly led to Southfence selling everything to Eurocorp whom owns the largest amount of deer/sheep netting machinery and other wire product machinery in the Southern hemisphere. Great firms to work for they were...best job I had for 14yrs, I was well looked after!.
And in the 70s I worked a draughtsman for Desmond Barry Black at Eclipse Wire in Palmerston North, also manufactured in Hastings and Hamilton. Much of the machinery was German that came to NZ after the war. Interesting to watch in operation.

no youre just broadcasting it on a highly visible publicly accessed (wonder why) internet forum .take a moment to reflect .I for one sure as hell wouldnt want you working on my premises ,as god only knows what you share with mates etc a bout what you might come across in the course of a task.thats assuming of course youre actually doing legitimate work and not just having a perving tour. "not taking photos...calling the cops"well one only has your word for that of course"after three postings you end up with egg on the moosh-dont bother replying ,sit back and analyse your posting -as though FAL arent regarded with enough Odium and ridicule by the great unwashed and knowall antis but our own kith &kin go shooting us in the hoof!
