Police are urgently trying to find a man who stole 11 guns from a police station.
Alan James Harris, 38, allegedly stole the firearms from the Palmerston North Police Station yesterday morning.
The guns were being used in an exhibit at the station or were to be destroyed.
Harris was found by a member of police staff in the yard of the police station at 7.40am.
He fled in a car, which police have since recovered, along with another car owned by him.
Acting Central District Commander Inspector Sarah Stewart said the burglary was being taken very seriously.
"Locating Harris is a high priority for Central District Police," she said.
"I urge anyone with information about his whereabouts to come forward to Police."
"A warrant for his arrest has been issued. He should not be approached."
She added: "I am very concerned about what has occurred — it is absolutely unacceptable."
None of the guns were police firearms, she said.
Police Commissioner Mike Bush has asked for an investigation into how Harris was able to get into the police station.
The investigation would also require an immediate audit of security around firearms at all police stations nationwide
I know - That's just gotta fill everybody with warm fuzzies that the Police got this hand in / confiscation sorted eh! - NOT!!!
Add to that - that a gang member just critically shot a person at the Harley Davidson Shop / Warehouse in Mt wellington this afternoon... Hmmm
Oh and gun confiscation bill is Finally discussed in mainstream media as being more than a billion dollars in cost off the back of the Nelson Fires articles... We are now becoming blamed as the reason why they are not going to deliver on their policy - Gotta wonder what planet they are on as CGT was never gonna get past NZF - and they've already spent the surplus just in overspend in the Health Budget alone as China goes into a economic slowdown...
Yep these Captains call changes of yours are making a hell of a difference..( Mind you almost as good a laugh as Collins be-moaning the loss of free speech - Good on all out there for climbing into her for being two faced on that after her performance during the select committee hearings with Mike Loder - has to be said)
At what stage are Govt and Police going to admit that the Captains call to kick for the corner to score a try is going to result in a turnover and a runaway try at the other end of the field!!! tick , tick ,tick...
They may not realise it but whilst there is still this A cat ceasefire in place - where all our firearms are still in our safes and that they still have time to modify changes into the Arms Act showing this to be a more considered approach without the same price tag... and before all those budget chickens fly back to the coop.
Don't worry Jacinda - You can still have all the international Gravitas and magazine front page shoots from your little French Cuddle around Limiting Social Media with Macron - we promise...

I'm drawn to the mountains and streams, its where life is clear, where the world makes most sense!
I’m pretty sure some of the guys called this.. they take the firearms from lawful owners, just for them to be stolen by a crim. What a joke.
Not sure if they’ll ever admit it @Carpe Diem
I laughed out load when I heard it on the radio. Not to worry he will hand them back in before the end of the amnesty.
Remember the 7 “P”s; Pryor Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance.
How ironic
I bet his ears are flapping?
Boom, cough,cough,cough
@scotty yeah I recall reading it at least a few times on here.
I also laughed but not that it was a funny thing to happen but that it was very ironic. People even said it!
I wonder how it happened seriously, 11 firearms.. they must have been sitting in the parking lot unattended..
Quick, someone call Winston Peters.
Old Winny will put that scoundrel in his place quick smart, and the guns will be returned by noon.
Use enough gun
Would be very interesting to know what type of firearms were stolen. Anyone hand in their firearms to the palmy police recently? Imagine that feeling you hand in your firearms and they get stolen the day after. Sheesh.
Maybe the station was empty because they were all out guarding the Dawn Parade
@Sako851 - and no value (if any), being agreed to YET!
I hate to say it, but Mike Bush looked mightily pleased about the 'eradication' of E cat licences and the holders (by association) becoming criminals - in the public's eyes.
Now he wants an 'investigation' into how this event happened?
Just like the 'thorough' vetting process of the Christchurch terrorist - don't expect any knuckles to be rapped - or dismissal notices to be handed out.
The start of the 'divide and conquer' process - led by the PM being fed false or grossly overstated statistics from our Police management - who, funnily enough, couldn't provide the CORRECT information to Mike Loder.
most likely it was closed .... like most police stations round the country only keep office hours 9am to 4.30pm monday to friday (this country must just look like a circus to the rest of the world right now how does that song go ? "clowns to the left of me jokers to the right")
