Thread: 1oz slugs

I was given couple boxes of shotgun ammo, some of it turned out to be loaded with 1oz saboted expanding slugs.
These rounds seems to be very lethal, but I only used shots so far so I have no idea where can be these ones used. I heard somewhere that sabotted rounds are illegal in nz.
I'm thinking to pull them all and use the primers and the powders and load them with shots unless someone come up with a better idea here.
I already pulled one to see what is exactly inside, but the crimping is very hard to undo

Why would they be illegal? Gun city stocks them I see.

Unless in a 12 gauge rifled barrel

Very very good loads,always good to have a few solids in pocket whenever carrying a shotgun.just never know when they may come in handy.

I assume they should be used with cylinder choke?

Ideally,but will fire through any choke...they have to be made to do so or someone would sue lol

They are sabots. The slug is a tad large than 50 cal, and a 12 guage is 18 ish mm dia? From memory they are quite accurate and being hollow nose, pretty devastating

Yes, they are hollow segmented slugs. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving side. Also the slugs weigh 1oz ~ 430grains, they are massive! They are probably great for pig hunting in the bush.

They’re ‘pretty devastating’ at the butt end too!

Those sabot slug cartridges are designed to be used in shotgun with rifled barrel.

It's a thing in North America where some states have a shotgun-only season for deer hunting.

Try shooting a few through your shotty and see how they go! but use an open choke if possible.

Very cool, they are probably the gold standard shotgun slug but definitely designed for a rifled barrel. Pretty sure they will shoot poorly from a smooth bore but every shotgun / barrel is different.
I have shot many critters with a Rem 870, scope mounted fully rifled gun. It would group 3" @100 with a red dot sight and was deadly.

This is so funny I can't resist . You say it is a rifle because it has a "Rifled barrel ", yet you define it as a 12 gauge which is a shotgun calibre
