Thread: Any antique shotgun people in the know around here?

I have a couple of antique shotguns and i want to know if anyone can give me some info on them?
They're Lyon and Lyon brand. Fully engraved. I have a his and hers pair. 12 and 20 gauge. 20 gauge is pretty much rooted but 12 is not too bad just a bit of pitting. Anyone have any history on these? cheers. Will post pics soon

I just shot the 12 gauge and it didn't blow up in my face which is a bonus. Pretty keen to use the 12 gauge for birds/bunnies.

You provide little information on what you have but if shooting what you have, establish what you have BEFORE shooting it with modern day cartridges.

Lyon & Lyon was a large retail outlet in India during the British Raj. I believe they had stores in Calcutta and Bombay and possibly elsewhere. They never manufactured anything but had guns made for them by various English gunmakers, from everyday grade up to the very best London guns. Photos and close-ups of proof marks etc. are needed for proper identification.

Awesome cheers guys. I will post pics today after work. I took it to a gunsmith up here who said it would be safe to shoot with light lead loads which i did yesterday. However he was unsure of the history. Def not damascus barrels.

Looks like damascus steel bbl to me. Dont fire it.

True? Gunsmith said it isn't a damascus. Maybe i need to find a shottie guru

The photo isn't that good but it's not Damascus. Some plain steel barrels were patterned to look like it but they are quite easy to spot. Nitro proof is also a give away. The only uestion really is chamber length.

If bbls are significantly pitted the NP stamp isnt worth a damn.

It definitely has some pitting in it. Gunsmith i showed said it should be ok to shoot light lead loads through. He said nothing heavier than 28gr but i'd def like a second opinion and maybe a valuation of sorts
