Got a Gun With Screw-in Chokes?

This is the result of poor storage for a gun with screw-in chokes. This was a local authority Animal Control gun that was carried by someone who never cleaned it . The choke had never been removed , and was seized solid in there.

Heat ,cold , freezing , prolonged soaking in penetrant ,brute force - none of these even got it to move .

So - if you have a screw-in choke gun - remove the tubes and lube the threads. Dont screw the tube in super tight - leave it sitting proud of the muzzle in storage , and give the tube a wee twist and turn every now and then to ensure it still moves.

Screw it in snug when you are going shooting , then back it out again.

It was only a cheapy shotgun , but the same goes for any gun - look after the tubes and dont let them get like this .

Radical- but I have seen 1 removed when all else failed, by tig welding a piece of steel across the inside of the choke and making a fork ended T bar wrench. Soaked in kroil for a few days and wound right out. This looks like a flush rem choke type, difficulty is getting purchase on the little notches to apply any real force to the tube. Gave up too easy I think. Leaving chokes loose? not for me- to much chance of forgetering.

I heard a couple of horror stories about chokes being rusted in
On the mossberg I used some copper coat. Just sticky enough that it doesn't come out under its own steam.
    Never tighter than finger tight.
Never rusty and doesn't come undone.
Grease would probably work just as well.
Never tried oil and probably never will now

This one had sat neglected for a good few years . The new owner had another barrel for it anyway so this one was going to be shortened. I just got the offcut to see why the tube was stuck so it was never going to get used anyways .

I had another gun some time back with the same issue but soaking in a mix of diesel and brake fluid for a long time , then heat , freeze , heat , freeze , and a home-made extractor tool with big crescent spanner finally freed that off.

I really dont care what you do with your gun - but please lube the tubes , and clean the threads well at the end of your shooting season. I use a nickel based lube on mine - because thats what is available to me .

Leaving them loose isn't the greatest idea, they unscrew slowly due to recoil. This one shot out of a perazzi? being used by someone used to extended chokes. Threads amazingly undamaged in the barrel. It was found in front of the trap house where the wads concentrate.

girvani semis have choke looking like that...funny they will take berretta chokes and the std berretta ones stick out slightly as beretta threads are deeper down wall of chokes..they will fit the other way around I think but didnt keep doing it as choke is inside muzzle completely..only did it to triple check the girvarni one was indeed that...

If you were careful and could get in there you could probably run a bead of weld around the inside of the choke and it will loosen it.

looked a little short for a rem choke but yes
everytime i take the gun out i oil the choke with rem oil and remove the excess.
on the pump arm or tube i leave them coated untill i use it again then remove the excess
oil not not grease guncity you f..kin heathens.
everybody should know the dif between tight and overtight
dont leave it loose recipe for a murphy moment.
if you have extra tubes change them once in a while just for the hell of it
    i only use a impcyl and a half/mod
a choice of two so it aint no biggy.

When it comes to gun maintenance us kiwis are terrible at times for the lack of it.

A bit of oil on a patch after every use, bore snake it when you get it out of the safe and a bit of wd40 on the exterior metal surfaces won't do ya wrong.

For lubrication of the action( semis) slide glide is you're friend as it's a grease not a oil so wont evaporate as it heats up during use.

For my chokes I just apply a dash of gunslick oil to the choke and screw it in and out a few times to make sure it's properly coated.
