Thread: mossberg 410 500e

Hello again Lads ,

So yesterday we had christmas at my place , the inlaws and the wifes grandad came for tea.
Long story short , the granddad , who is an awsome person , turned up with a 410 pump action 500e mossberg shotgun for me out of his collection of guns. I was'nt expecting this and safe to say I am super happy !
He is fairly old and has given me a .22 mag and a U/O shotgun (nikko) before. He is slowly passing on his stuff to people who will use it and care for it ....

Anyway.

School me on the 410 shotgun , I have done alittle research and know the basics. I want to use this as a rabbit gun and pehaps in duck season a back up gun. It takes 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells. I have not had her apart yet but I will reblue her once I get back to work mid january.

What load should i use for rabbit , Im thinking 3 inch shells would be the go too for rabbits and ducks.

best used on quail/grouse , stick to 12gu for rabbit/hare

Yeah im having a look at prices for 3 inch shells and its not too bad compared to 22 mag rounds.
Everything is expensive these days with guns and ammunition.

MATE....... you have come to the right place..the wee .410 is one of my absolute favourites...keep your eye out for reloading gear for it...and buy it,you wont regret it. Ive got a very old lee whackamole set and it makes good ammunition very very cheaply.
winchester 3" is a 11/16th oz load thats nearly 3/4 oz which is the old load and can be duplicated by reloading.
the wee .410 is one cartridge that needs to be patterned more than any other guage .
they love one load and hate any other.
winchester shells are always good and #4 has always worked well for me.
strangely #6 havent been s ogood for me and a mixture of different shot sizes the best of all.
rio make cheap shells..they are cheap for a reason... 5/16th oz is pitiful absolutely pitiful
a 1/2oz load of #4s will kill rabbits,thats the std 2 1/2" loading but a 3" load of fours works better. its taken lots of ducks for me over the years,a couple of black swans and even canada geese,up close mind you and THAT IS THE KEY to the 410...25 yards its it....patterns just get too thin out further.
gamebore make good shells too. kee pall your empties..you can get away with reloading by hand...with luck the pump will handle them..a break open gun allows all sorts of crimes in reloading.

Thanks micky duck , i will be venturing into town tommorow too see what ammunition the local shop has for the mossberg. Im looking forward to getting to know how she shoot and performs.

wingman is up in your end of the country and makes everlasting shells...he could possibly be talked into reloading some for you....

Love my 410 single shot. It's an extractor not an ejector which makes it easy to hang on to spent hulls. Like Micky says as a break open its very forgiving on reloads which prob doesn't encourage fastidiousness or accuracy in putting them together. While I too have the Lee whackamole tool, you can reload any Shotgun shell with whats in a workshop tool box. Hardest bit is resizing the metal hull bass. For that you need to make a precisely measured resizing "ring" which of course could be a square plate with the hole in it. Then a means of pushing it over the hull base or pushing the hull down into the hole to the rim. How a MEC Jr resizing station works vs their collet resizer in other press models or their separate bench mounted resizer. Not a lot of force is required. But the hull will need to be held square to the sizing hole. An old drill press could be repurposed as an arbor press.

410 such a great gun.have a break open youth 410..plastic stock the kids use..was a bit short .cut a two recoil pads out of a old Jandal.a fixed them to the butt.and bought a slide on recoil pad .some nice duck tape on it
Holds up nice .even the adults like using it in the ducks . Got gun for the kids to finish off the woundys...had a bit of a kick so we stuffed some fishing sinkers in the hollow butt till we got the right weight balance to absorb some of the recoil.we shoot trap 3"loads number 7 shot and 19gram loads.so hadn't got the pellet density at afar but gives the kids more pellets up close.

we found the .410 BETTER on woundies than steel out of .12ga full choke and load of #4s or better still mixture of allsorts works a treat for that job.

@john that link is priceless...and the extra bit on bottom fits in very well with this place too. hmmm where can I "find" some 444 brass?? to pick up for free LOL.... cheap hua,Ive got more rounds of .410 sitting here than Ive shot in last 5 years already....
one bit I picked up out of that link was the split shot with heavy nylon....... buckshot loads already pattern tight as I believe they slipstream each other..if a fella could find sinker mold of right size the options are endless and a bit of mono through the guts of all 5 pellets and knotted would really tighten patterns up.... might even do a 5 shot group to match @Dannb with his 30/06AI LOL and only fire one round to do it!!!!

Great little gun but as mentioned ammo is dear as poison. Always has been.
I would love to use it on feral pigeons under bridges etc.
Would be mint.
Lucky if its had 20 packets through it and probably less.

Bill Axeby has good bits in his book The Bird Hunters to say about using one...his choices of ammunition and chokes differ from my own but he had reloading gear from get go so had time and oppertunity to experiment. 3/8oz of 8s would be rather useful if range was right.

So I ventured into town this afternoon and brought some 410 ammo.
I brought some RIO 2 1/5 and some other brand 3 inch at number 4.

Tried the rio 6 size on a target and it was a alright pattern , I only fired two shots but the gun works really well and Im stoked with the beast.

Used the 410 today to blast some clays and get my eye in for the up comming season. Used my nikko under over which performed well.
I ended up breaking down the 410 when I got home as it wasnt pumping the next shell through nicely.
Smooth as butter now.

Can anyone clear this up for me ? Is the 410 still exempt from the whole "lead over water " saga. ? I did some research on fish and game but it doesnt seem clear to me.
